Preview: Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW) – Ballroom Brawl (7/20/19)

Ballroom Brawl

Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW) return to the Thornbury Theatre with the 8th annual Ballroom Brawl this weekend.

This year’s event will carry with it an extra aura of prestige, akin to a Wrestlemania, as MCW welcome aboard special guest hosts, comedy group Aunty Donna. Aunty Donna is an Australian absurdist comedy group from Melbourne who has performed at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and Melbourne Fringe Festival, where they have been nominated or won multiple awards.

Inside the squared circle though is where MCW always shines, and this weekend’s card is once again stacked from top to bottom.

MCW Intercommonwealth Championship Tournament Final: Danny Psycho vs Lochy Hendricks

After multiple months of competition, the MCW Intercommonwealth Championship tournament finally culminates with a clash between two athletes who couldn’t be any more diametrically opposed.

Danny Psycho is a bruising brawler and the first-ever MCW Heavyweight Champion. Conversely Lochy Hendricks is a weasely, cocky, young upstart who simply feels everything in the wrestling world should be handed to him on a silver platter.

These two men will battle it out for perhaps one of the most prestigious championships in all of Australian wrestling.

Hendricks has proclaimed that this will be his final match in Australia before heading to Florida to join his “uncle Paul”. Which leads us to the lingering question heading into this match, what will happen to the championship should Hendricks win?

Matty Wahlberg vs Dowie James vs TK Cooper

After an incredibly successful debut Matty Wahlberg, aka the “Natural Born Athlete” aka “The 21st Century Success Story”, is gunning for the top of MCW. Since dominating his debut match against MCW luminary Mike Burr Sydney’s Wahlberg now sets his sights on Dowie James and TK Cooper.

Both Cooper and James claim to be the best athletes in their respective regions. For Cooper, this has meant the UK and New Zealand. For James he has always been one of Melbourne’s most revered competitors, holding every championship in MCW.

All three men will be looking to pick up a victory in this match and thus carry momentum into the Ballroom Brawl later in the evening.

20 men will enter into this traditional over the top rope battle royal match up. The winner will receive a guaranteed opportunity at the MCW World Heavyweight Championship at any time of their choosing.

With a stacked cast of athletes gearing up to enter this year’s match, it is going to be harder than ever to come up with the almost sure-fire championship opportunity.

MCW Tag Team Championship- The Natural Classics (Tome & Stevie Filip) (C) vs The Velocities (Jude London & Paris De Silva)

Two of the hottest tag teams in all of Australian wrestling will finally clash this weekend.

Whilst both teams are relatively inexperienced the chemistry they have shown is unrivaled. Both teams have proven they can hang with the best in the past. Whether that be the Four Nations (Mick Moretti and Jack J. Bonza) in the case of The Velocities or The Brat Pack (Mitch Waterman and Nick Bury) in the case of The Natural Classics.

Both teams wrestle at an unbelievable pace so this will be a blink and you’ll miss it affair. With both teams vining to prove they belong at the pinnacle of not only the MCW Tag Team division but the entire Australian Tag Team division, this match has potential to be one of the best matches of the year.

Kellyanne & Jessica Troy vs LUX (Xena & Kingsley) vs Indi Hartwell & Steph De Lander

Last month at Tensions Rising Indi Hartwell suffered a shock loss at the hands of “The Arm Collector” Jessica Troy. Hartwell, however, has claimed that with the return of her best friend Steph De Lander the combined forces of the self-proclaimed “Australia’s Hottest Commodities” will be able to avenge the loss this weekend.

However, Del Lander and Hartwell were perhaps not expecting Troy to find a partner in the form of Kellyanne. For months Kellyanne has been a thorn in the side of Hartwell, will that continue this weekend?

One final variable which nobody was expecting to be a part of this match is the new tag team force known as LUX. The violent psychopaths Xena and Kingsley will go to any lengths to prove they belong in the mix of the MCW women’s division. Xena, in particular, will be looking for revenge against Kellyanne, who shattered Xena’s phone into a million pieces last month during their matchup.

MCW World Heavyweight & SPW Zealand Championships- Slex (C) vs JK Moody

Just last weekend Slex became a dual champion by defeating SPW New Zealand Champion Marcus Kool at the Southern Pro Wrestling (SPW) Southern Rumble.

During that same event, JK Moody would hold onto this SPW Tag Team Championship and also win the Southern Rumble granting him an SPW New Zealand Championship match. Rather than biding his time Moody has chosen to immediately challenge Slex this weekend, which will thus give him a shot at both the MCW and SPW championships.

Earlier this year Moody made his MCW, which saw him winning the hearts of many of the MCW faithful. Although it is unlikely that he will be entering into this match as the fan-favorite against MCW megastar Slex.
