Preview: WSW – Zero Fear, Night 1: Melbourne (6/21/19)

This weekend, a swath of international wrestling stars from IMPACT, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Ring Of Honor (ROH) descend upon Australia to mix it up with the best our country has to offer. First up is Zero Fear Melbourne Night 1!

Two of Australia hottest young prospects will receive a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents in this ‘dark match’.

Both men in this match love to fly around the ring at breakneck speed so expect this one to kick the show off with an incredible energy burst.

Jeff Cobb vs Slex

It’s ‘Business’ versus ‘Bro’ when Slex faces off against the current Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), and 2018 Battle Of Los Angeles winner, Jeff Cobb on the opening night of the tour.

Over the last couple of years, Slex has taken on some incredibly tough competition, including Kazuchika Okada. However, Jeff Cobb is an entirely different style of fighter and could prove quite the challenge for the Australian star.

In order to come out on top Slex is going to have to employ every once of business acumen in his body and avoid the unparalleled suplex arsenal of Cobb.

Joey Ryan vs Indi Hartwell

The master of inter-gender wrestling, Joey Ryan, brings his skills to Melbourne on night one of the Zero Fear tour. Standing opposite him will be ‘Impressive’ Indi Hartwell.

Hartwell is a woman who has traversed the country, and the globe, asserting her dominance over the women’s division.  Known for her no-nonsense, aggressive attitude and style Hartwell will likely not take kindly to the shenanigans of Ryan, who could be in for a night of pain.

The match this Friday will be an opportunity for Hartwell to prove that she is not only one of Australia’s top female talents but one of the country’s top overall talents.

WSW Women’s Championship: Jordynne Grace (c) vs Kellyanne

Inaugural WSW Women’s Champion Jordynne Grace will defend the title on night one of the tour against the enigmatic Kellyanne.

Grace captured the championship back in March as part of the WSW Defend & Destroy by winning a tournament which also featured Savannah Summer, Indi Hartwell, Shazza McKenzie, Erika Reid and her opponent in this match Kellyanne.

With the tournament finals featuring Grace, McKenzie and Kellyanne last year you can be sure that Kellyanne will be entering into this contest with added motivation after just coming up short previously.

This match certainly has the potential to steal the show. Look for both ladies to use power in order to walk out with their hand raised.

Lucha Bros (Fenix & Pentagon Jr) vs Filip Bros (Tome & Stevie Filip)

Arguably the worlds best tag team, the Lucha Bros, will take on yet another of Australia’s best talents at Zero Fear Melbourne.

The Filip Bros recently proved they are the best tag team in Melbourne by capturing the Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW) tag team championship from The Brat Pack (Nick Bury & Mitch Waterman). Can they now overcome two of the best tag team performers on the planet?

Hot off defeating another brother tag team, The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), for the AAA World Tag Team Championship the Lucha Bros will be coming into this one brimming with confidence. Can they keep the momentum rolling or will the young upstarts secure the upset, add the biggest win of their careers?

WSW Tag Team Championship: Villain Enterprises (Marty Scurll & Brody King) (c) vs Flippin’ Machines (Brian Cage & Flip Gordon)

The World Series Wrestling tag team division is incredibly stacked. Just look at this championship match featuring four of the hottest talents in the world right now.

Not only are the men walking into this one draped in WSW gold but they also hold the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, with fellow Villain Enterprises member PCO. Both King and Scurll are coming off a lengthy tour of Japan with Scurll competing in the Best Of The Super Juniors and King instantly becoming a standout thanks to his mind-blowing athleticism.

Across the ring from Villain Enterprises are the challengers, current IMPACT Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion Brian Cage and ROH’s Flip Gordon. Collectively known as The Flippin’ Machines these two men have proven to be an incredibly difficult combination for their opponents to overcome as they expertly compliment each other’s power and flying styles.

This one is guaranteed to be a barn burner. Those in attendance should also be prepared to have their minds blown by both Cage and King, two incredible big men who defy the laws of physics.

WSW World Title: Robbie Eagles (c) vs Joey Janela

A rematch almost one full year in the making as Australia’s own Robbie Eagles now welcomes ‘The Bad Boy’ Joey Janela to his home turf.

These two men first went toe to toe at PWG All Star Weekend 14 in September last year. A match which would see Janela come out victorious after destroying Eagles with a tombstone piledriver on the ring apron, followed by another onto a chair at ringside. Despite the undeniable damage to Eagles’ head from these two devastating moves he remembers them well and will be setting his sights on gaining revenge over Janela.

Given the violence and animosity of their first encounter, I would suspect this won’t be your regular Eagles match as he will be looking to inflict as much, if not more, pain on Janela than he himself endured during the first meeting.
