Brutus Beefcake began his career in 1977, as the kayfabe brother of Hulk Hogan in the Boulder Brothers, with Brutus portraying Eddie Boulder to Hogan’s Terry Boulder. When Terry Boulder became Hogan, they continued the brother narrative briefly, with Brutus becoming Dizzy Hogan.
In 1984, he joined the WWF alongside Hulk Hogan, but this time the pairing was dissolved and he was renamed Brutus Beefcake and paired with “Luscious” Johnny Valiant as his manager. He was soon paired with another of Valiant’s clients, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and they became known as The Dream Team. They captured the WWF World Tag Team titles in 1985 and held them for 226 days.
The Dream Team last for three years, before it imploded at WrestleMania III. Despite winning their match against the Rougeau Brothers, Beefcake and Valentine got into an argument that lead to Valentine and new Dream Team stable member Dino Bravo attacking Beefcake post-match. Beefcake turned face in the process, and later that night came down to assist Roddy Piper in shaving the head of “Adorable” Adrian Adonis, becoming “The Barber” in the process.
As “The Barber”, Beefcake become one of the top faces in the company. But sadly, just as he was expected to become Intercontinental Champion, he was involved in a parasailing accident in 1990 that severely damaged his face. While he would make bit appearances for the WWF (including hosting the legendary Barber Shop segment in 1991 where Shawn Michaels superkicked Marty Jannetty through the window), but it wouldn’t be until 1993 that he’d make a proper return. He briefly re-teamed with Hulk Hogan in the Mega-Maniacs, but by the end of the summer, he was gone from the WWF.
By 1994, he was once again following Hogan, this time to World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and for two years, he bounced around multiple gimmicks, from The Butcher, Zodiac, Brother Bruti and The Booty Man, but he had little success. In 1996, he was gone from WCW.
He made a second run with WCW in 1998, when he joined the nWo as The Disciple, as the bodyguard for “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan. His second stint last a year and by the end of 1999, he was gone again.
Since then, he’s remained working the indie circuit around the country, but he’ll forever be remembered as the wild colour Barber that ran amok in the WWF in the 1980s, and now he’s in the WWE Hall of Fame.
