Southern Pro Wrestling (SPW), New Zealand’s premier wrestling promotion is hosting their first flagship show of 2019 this weekend with Fight For Gold. During the event, both the SPW New Zealand Heavyweight Championship and the SPW New Zealand Tag Team Championships will be defended.
The major talking point for this show though is the Fight For Gold tournament which will award the winner with a briefcase which entitles the holder to a championship opportunity at any time, anywhere they choose. The tournament format consists of four qualifying singles matches where the winners advance to a fatal four-way ladder match to crown the ultimate Fight For Gold winner.
Let’s take a closer look at the entire card on offer though.
Fight For Gold Qualifier: Robbie Eagles vs. T-Rex
Australian Bullet Club member and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) star Robbie Eagles is set to make his way across the ditch for his debut with SPW. Eagles is known for his high-flying athleticism and will be a tough man to beat in the ladder match final if he can progress through the qualifying stage. T-Rex undoubtedly won’t be giving the ‘Sniper Of The Skies’ a warm welcome but instead will be looking to clip the Eagles’ wings. T-Rex will look to do this by using his power to instead pave his own way into the final where he will be able to dish out even more punishment with a ladder at his disposal.
Fight For Gold Qualifier: Brock Duncan vs. Shane Sinclair
The very first SPW New Zealand Heavyweight Champion Shane Sinclair is looking to use the Fight For Gold tournament to once again reclaim his place at the top of the SPW pecking order. However, in order to do so, Sinclair will have to first get past the returning ‘King Of Sax Style’ Brock Duncan.
Fight For Gold Qualifier: Will Power vs. Charlie Roberts
Two of New Zealand’s most experienced competitors in Will Power and Charlie Roberts are set to face off in the first round of the Fight For Gold tournament. Leading into this match Roberts has said that Power will be nothing more than a stepping stone on his road to the SPW New Zealand Heavyweight Championship but the former champion Power certainly won’t be laying down without a fight.
Fight For Gold Qualifier: Jaxon Cross vs. JK Moody
In the final qualifying match of the tournament, two of SPW’s hottest prospects will go toe-to-toe as they both attempt to take that next step in their careers. Over recent months JK Moody has been embarking on international tours to Australia as he looks to spread the message of the ‘Antidote’. During these tours to Melbourne City Wrestling (MCW), Moody has faced off against Ritchie Taylor and Mikey Nicholls. Will these battles with veteran competitors give Moody the edge of the relative newcomer Jaxon Cross?
Fight For Gold Fatal Four-Way Ladder Match Final: ?? vs. ?? vs. ?? vs. ??
Impossible to predict what will happen with this match, given we don’t know who will progress to this stage of the tournament. However, given the quality of the competitors in the opening qualifying matches it’s a safe bet to say the SPW crowd is in for a treat with whatever combination of finalist are assembled.
SPW New Zealand Tag Team Championship: Detention (Sky & Ryder) (c) vs. Down To Fight (Luke Grayson & Wana Fight)
The rivalry between these two teams has become quite bitter. To add even more spice to the match SPW General Manager Professor Palmer has added the stipulation that if Down To Fight lose this match they must break up for good. Will Down To Fight finally be able to capture the gold or is this the end of them as a team?
SPW New Zealand Heavyweight Championship: Kane Khan (c) vs. Marcus Kool
Since picking up the biggest win of his career against Will Ospreay at last year’s Southern Rumble Marcus Kool has returned to his brash, confident self. Whilst constantly reminding the SPW faithful of his victory over Ospreay Kool has also been petitioning for a championship opportunity against the newly crowned champion Kane Khan. Khan only captured the title back in October at Halloween Haunting and definitely won’t want to relinquish the gold this soon. These two men are at the top of their game and the top of the food chain in SPW so this match is sure to deliver as both men leave everything in the ring to capture the championship.
