This Sunday, history will be made – WWE will be holding its first ever all women’s pay per view event, WWE Evolution. Set to be held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York, in front a crowd of almost 10,000 fans, the event will consist of several female Hall of Famers returning to the ring, as well as four title matches between WWE’s current crop of female superstars.
Raw Women’s Title: Ronda vs. Nikki
However, the match which provides the most intrigue is the first event, where Ronda Rousey will have to defend her title against former friend and teammate Nikki Bella. WWE matches are unlike a huge number of sporting or entertainment events. While you can predict the outcome of a match based perhaps on performance history, and entertaining games usually have strategies you can adopt to attempt a win, WWE is different. One needs to take into account the pre-meditated curveballs which always throw off fans. Therefore, we thought we’d preview what we could expect from the main event in an attempt to shed a little light on how the bout might unravel.
The Story So Far
At SummerSlam in August, Ronda Rousey ‘The Baddest Woman on the Planet’, in what was her third ever WWE match, took down Alexa Bliss to win the Raw Women’s Championship. After her win, the Bella Twins, Nikki and Brie Bella, proceeded to celebrate with their friend and newly crowned champion, Rousey.
Two months later at Super Show-Down, it was announced that Rousey would have to defend her title in one of the matches scheduled to take place at WWE’s historic Evolution event. After the announcement, Rousey and The Bella Twins teamed up to defeat the Riott Squad, the triple threat outfit consisting of Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan in a dominant display.
On the following episode of Monday Night Raw, Rousey and The Bella Twins once again dispatched of the Riott Squad in a rematch of the bout which took place at Summer Show Down just one week earlier.
It was here that as Rousey began to celebrate, The Bella Twins attacked her in a brutal betrayal, a title match between Nikki Bella and Rousey was subsequently announced for Evolution, creating one of the most interesting WWE rivalries in recent years.
The Build Up
In the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw, Ronda Rousey launched a scathing attack on the two sisters in front of a sold-out crowd at the Wells Fargo Centre, Philadelphia, questioning the roots of their success, branding them the ‘Do Nothing Bellas’.
Claiming that they had only achieved their level of notoriety due to high profile relationships with male WWE superstars she stated:
“You leeched off of the names of your men. You plagiarise and dilute their move sets.
“You’re not pioneers, you’re relics of the past waiting to be eviscerated like smallpox.
“My entire career I’ve been knocking down doors. I knocked down doors in Judo, I knocked down doors in Strikeforce, I knocked down doors in the UFC and now I’m knocking down doors here at home in the WWE.
“The only door you ever knocked down was the door to John Cena’s bedroom. And he eventually threw you out of that exact same door.”
Following these brutal remarks, the Bella’s ordered that security come out and escort Rousey from the premises, but before any of the staff could restrain and remove the former UFC champion, she dispatched of the men with a series of Judo and MMA inspired throws.
Our Prediction
It’s always difficult to predict where the WWE intends on taking different storylines, but with Rousey’s popularity, fame and celebrity status she has all the hallmarks of being a mainstay of the wrestling brand for years to come.
So it would make little sense for the WWE organisers to slow her momentum after less than ten matches, and put a loss on her record, it is for that reason that we’re predicting a Rousey win.
Winner: Ronda Rousey
