Meet Hechicero: PWG’s Newest Luchador

You may have seen Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG)‘s announcement of the lineup for the upcoming Smokey and the Bandido show in October. The show will have it’s resident luchadores like Rey Fenix, Rey Horus, Bandido & Flamita and Puma King, but, in this instance, the company added former NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Champion and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) wrestler Hechicero.

From Monterey to Mexico City

Hechicero started wrestling in his hometown in Monterey in 2001, primarily in the indie scene there. He won masks and was one of the headliners in Monterey until 2014. Hechicero was then scouted and introduced in Mexico’s top promotion CMLL. As he said in a recent interview, “In Monterey I was a main-eventer, in CMLL I’m starting from the bottom.”

In CMLL, Hechicero was part of the new young stars that the company would build. With Soberano, Dragon Rojo, Fuego, Sanson, among others, Hechicero was put to the test to see if he could carry the company as one of the main guys in the future. He went on to have a change of attire, new looks and started throwing flames in the ring. Two years after debuting, he defeated Rey Bucanero to win the NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship.

Rise Against Foreign Talent

Hechicero has been wrestling outside of CMLL lately. In 2016, he wrestled for Ring of Honor in the tournament to crown the first ROH 6-Man Champions alongside Ultimo Guerrero & Okamura. They lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winners, The Kingdom. Also, he has appeared in New Japan Pro Wrestling with the co-promoted FantasticaMania tours.

Lately, he wrestled for Mexico’s third biggest promotion The Crash against Daga. That match was crowned as the match of the night for it’s mix of lucha libre, strong-style and technical wrestling. The match got over really big and it could have been a selling point to the guys in PWG to hire Hechicero for their latest show. He is going up against Zack Sabre Jr. who is no stranger to Lucha Libre. That match will be fierce and technical masterpiece. Keep your eyes open for The Wizard himself Hechicero.
