At Shine 53 today, Shine held a tournament between eight women – Mercedes Martinez, Allysin Kay (formerly Sienna in IMPACT Wrestling), Brandi Lauren, Stormie Lee, Candy Cartwright and Ivelisse – to crown the new Shine Champion. The previous champion, LuFisto, had to vacate the title due to health issues this past June after a record-shattering 529-day reign as Shine’s Champion. The finals came down to Mercedes Martinez vs. Allysin Kay, with Kay defeating Martinez to claim her first Shine Championship.

It marked the first indie card for Allysin Kay following her departure from IMPACT Wrestling a few months previous. This follows a three year run with IMPACT Wrestling as Sienna, where she captured the IMPACT Knockouts title on two occasions. Shortly after her departure from IMPACT, she was announced as an entrant for the WWE’s 2018 edition of the Mae Young Classic, where she is slated to face another former Knockout Champion in Mia Yim in the first round. The Mae Young Classic got underway on the WWE Network last Wednesday.
