One of joshi‘s living legends, Sendai Girls‘ founder and 23 year veteran of the ring Meiko Satomura added another piece of hardware to her trophy case last night, ending Danshoku Dino‘s third reign as the KO-D Openweight Championship, the top singles title with Dramatic Dream Team (DDT Pro) in Japan. Meiko is the first women’s wrestler to hold the KO-D Openweight Championship in the titles 18 year history.

The KO-D Openweight Championship has been through six champions in 2018 so far, and fourth one this month. Shigehiro Irie was on his second reign entering August, before losing to Sami Callihan at Rockstar Pro Amped on August 1, 2018 in Dayton, Ohio. In his first defence a week later, Callihan lost it back to Irie at the following week’s Rockstar Pro Amped event. Irie returned to Japan in his third run as champion, but in his first defense of the reign, he lost it Danshoku Dino two weeks ago. Much like how IWGP is the kayfabe governing body of New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), King of DDT (KO-D) is the governing body of DDT Pro.
After conquering multiple promotions, holding the World titles in Japanese promotions like Sendai Girls, Stardom, and GAEA, Meiko Satomura has gone on a bit of an international excursion of late, wrestling in the UK and US more frequently than before – her last big stint in the US was in 1996-1997, when she was part of World Championship Wrestling (WCW)‘s women’s division. But she adds the KO-D Openweight Championship to another men’s title she recently acquired, when she defeated Chris Brookes for the Fight Club PRO Championship in the UK in March of this year (which she still holds). She’s also an entrant in this year’s Mae Young Classic, which begins this Wednesday at 10pm EST following NXT with the Bracketology special.
