David Starr finally overcame all the odds and won his first wrestling tournament since wXw World Tag League in 2016, when he defeated Zachary Wentz in the final match of last night’s CZW Best of the Best XVII to become the tournament’s grand champion.

Starr made it to the finals of this year’s wXw 16 Carat Gold tournament in Germany, losing to Absolute Andy, and also made the finals of the 2017 wXw World Tag League, before his team Massive Product (alongside Jurn Simmons) was defeated by Ringkampf‘s WALTER and Timothy Thatcher. Last summer as part of the WCPW (Defiant Wrestling) Pro Wrestling World Cup, Starr also fell short in advancing past the Qualifiers, losing to Jay Lethal in the finals for one of the spots in the actual World Cup tournament. He’s entered (but failed to get into the semi-finals) for several other big tournaments in the past year, such as last year’s PROGRESS Super Strong Style 16, PCW’s Kris Travis Memorial, IWA Mid South’s Ted Petty Invitational, and this year’s PWX 16.

This marked David Starr’s third straight participation at CZW Best of the Best, making his debut in the 2016 edition. In his first tournament, he made the finals, but lost to Jonathan Gresham. At last year’s tournament, he failed to make it out of the first round, losing out to AR Fox in his opening match. Starr will get his chance to make it two tournaments in a row, as he’s returning to PROGRESS next month to take part in the 2018 Strong Style 16 tournament, although he faces some stiff competition.
