There’s much plenty of media attention to the current situation involving WWE Superstar Rich Swann and his arrest Saturday night on charges of domestic assault and confinement. The former WWE Cruiserweight Champion was arrested after he apparently assaulted his wife, who tried to flee the couples’ car after Swann got heated over an argument in the car. While Swann has been getting plenty of mention, the person who has not been mentioned as much is his wife, Vannarah Riggs, better known to the wrestling community as Su Yung.
Su Yung has been wrestling for nearly a decade now, beginning in 2008 with Memphis, Tennessee’s Magnificent Ladies of Wrestling (MLW). Two years into her career, she was signed by the WWE to a developmental deal and sent to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where she spent two years under the name Sonia. She was released in 2011 and immediately dove back into the indie circuit, where she’s continued ever since. She’s grown more each year, appearing for such promotions as SHIMMER, SHINE, Stardom, Queens of Combat (QOC), Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU), Anarchy Championship Wrestling (ACW), PWX, CWF Mid-Atlantic and many more across North America. She added the UK indie circuit to her travelogue this past year as well, appearing for Southside Wrestling Entertainment (SWE), Preston City Wrestling (PCW) and Lucha Forever.
From her early days through FCW and her return to the indies, Su Yung was always more of the All-American girl type. A happy go lucky women’s wrestler who won the hearts of the pure. But as her second run in the indies progressed, we began to see a darker, more demonic side of Su Yung emerge, leading to the amazing character work we see today from one of the indie’s top performers. She’s the current reigning QOC, FEST, and Girl Fight Champion, as well as the Women’s Champion for Florida’s Independent Championship Wrestling (ICW).
Last Word On Pro Wrestling urges you to check out some of Su Yung’s previous work and support her on her journey going forward. While she may have been the victim this past weekend, she is not weak by any means. She is as tough a warrior in the squared circle as anyone and if you get a chance to see her live in the coming year, make an effort. You’ll see what the rest of us have been championing for years.
