When Dolph Ziggler became the number one contender for AJ Styles‘ WWE World Championship, the WWE Universe groaned. Ziggler vs. Styles will be entertaining, but there’s almost no doubt that Styles will be retaining his championship. After all, Ziggler couldn’t even beat the Miz. However, there’s one thing people haven’t realized.
What Dolph Ziggler vs. AJ Styles Could Mean
This is just a hypothetical theory, but it is an exciting one. A couple of months ago, a rumor started running around that AJ Styles would be wrestling against WWE Hall of Famer, Shawn Michaels. Everyone got really excited for this match, as both workers are phenomenal in the ring, and would put on an instant classic.
Michaels has been retired since he lost his match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI back in 2010, but since he retired on his own terms, people have been discussing dream matches for years. There have been rumors about Michaels vs. CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Sting, Seth Rollins, and most recently, Styles.
It’s unlikely that Michaels will come out of retirement, but booking Styles against Ziggler creates an interesting situation. See, Ziggler has been criticised for looking and wrestling too much like the Heartbreak Kid. Lately, Ziggler has even begun using the Superkick as his finisher instead of the ZigZag.
Dream-Booking
Sending Ziggler from the mid-card back to the main event after losing a feud doesn’t make sense. Usually you want to book a challenger to look strong so they’ll come off as a believable contender. Unfortunately, the WWE could have Ziggler beat the entire SmackDown Live roster by himself and fans still wouldn’t buy him as a champion.
The SmackDown roster won’t participate in another pay per view until the Royal Rumble, which is six weeks away. This title match will likely take place on the Tuesday night show. So what if, during the build, Styles taunts Ziggler to ripping off Michaels too often. During Talking Smack this week, Styles has already talked about how “all Ziggler has is that superkick”.
During their match, Styles could even use a superkick of his own to put Ziggler to rest. Much like how Styles has started referring to himself as the “champ that runs the camp” to taunt John Cena, he could start bragging about his superkick. He could be saying he has the best super kick in the history of sports entertainment when Shawn’s music hits.
This match is so huge, it wouldn’t have to be for the title. Frankly, nobody would complain about Styles vs. Michaels being a non-title match. With Cena returning in two weeks, and Baron Corbin moving on from Kalisto, there were other challengers for the title. They could’ve even involved Bray Wyatt, but instead, they put Ziggler in that spot.
Of course, this could just be purely hypothetical. Maybe they just want someone to put on a decent program with Styles while they kill time. But the rumors are there, Michaels is reportedly training other wrestlers down in NXT, and a match-up between these two legends would give SmackDown the star power it has been lacking.
