KJ Bolden (safety, Georgia) enters his true junior season with a wealth of experience in the SEC. With Malaki Starks drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2025, Bolden replaced him in the Georgia defensive scheme. Does he have the skill set to be a first-round pick?

Strengths
Bolden is used in a variety of roles by Georgia. He sees most snaps as one of two deep safeties, covering the wider field side of the field. Bolden will also play some single high safety. On obvious passing downs, Georgia uses three safeties, and Bolden is used as the middle of the three. He’s responsible for patrolling the intermediate middle area of the field. On a few snaps, Bolden will also drop down as a box safety or line up over a slot receiver. In many regards, his role is similar to Dillon Thieneman’s at Oregon last season.
Bolden’s best traits are his speed and range. These are most evident when he’s playing a single high safety role. He can get over to the sideline, showing a “plus” closing burst to help him make plays. He’s responsible in this role, as nothing gets behind him.

Bolden’s speed is also on show when he comes downhill to support against shorter passes or against the run. While he moves well, when approaching the ball carrier, he is always under control and in a good position to make the tackle. This technique means he’s an excellent tackler.
His transition to break on the ball in front of him is sudden and impressive. Coupled with his closing burst, he takes away plays that might look promising for an offense.
On the odd occasion when he bites on misdirection, Bolden’s recovery speed is impressive. He should run a very fast 40 time at the NFL Combine.
Areas to Improve
Listed at 195 lbs by Georgia, Bolden looks much lighter. His frame looks slight, and he is similarly built to Travis Hunter, who was 6’0” and 188 lbs at the 2025 NFL Combine. While Bolden doesn’t miss many tackles (just one in the three games watched), projecting him forward to the NFL against big tight ends, his slight frame is a concern. Given the NFL is moving to more two and three-tight end sets, this is more of a concern than even two years ago.

Bolden has some man coverage experience, but it’s not extensive. On the whole, his movement skills mean he’s solid in the area. However, he does like to keep his hands on his man. He’s not overly “grabby”, but he doesn’t need to do this as he’s not stressed by the receiver’s speed. Contact in the NFL often leads to flags, so it would be prudent for him to get this out of his game.
While Bolden’s speed means his range is excellent, there are some false steps initially. With another year of experience, his processing should improve, and this should see him be more decisive early in plays. This little thing should help him increase his interception total, as right now he will break up passes, but if he’s there a step earlier, he can make the interception.
Bolden’s least effective role is as an in-the-box safety. If Bolden gets blocked by a tight end or offensive lineman, he predictably struggles.
Key Tests in 2026
The Georgia schedule is fairly manageable for an SEC one. The biggest test for Bolden as a safety will be the Ole Miss road game on November 7. This rematch of the quarter-final playoff game on New Year’s Day will give Bolden a great chance to show his range.
The other standout game is the October 10 road test against Alabama.
Other tests include at Oklahoma (September 26), hosting Auburn (October 17), and a matchup against LaNorris Sellers and South Carolina on November 21.

KJ Bolden NFL Draft Projection
Right now, Bolden is literally Thieneman light. Bolden’s slight frame is a concern projecting him forward, and he should be looking to hit the 200 lb mark at the Combine, should he declare.
However, Bolden’s speed, range, and closing speed are up there with the former Oregon man’s.
Thieneman was taken with the 25th pick in April, and given that the 2027 class is looking a little better, Bolden’s stock would be late first to early second round.
