J.J. McCarthy has had a rough two years since entering the NFL, and you could blame him if he no longer wanted to play for the Vikings. After winning the National Championship with Michigan in 2024, it has been all downhill for the young quarterback since being drafted by Minnesota in 2024. During the preseason of his rookie year, McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury. Upon returning for his sophomore season, his numbers did not exactly set the world on fire.
In 2025, he appeared in 10 games and threw for 1,632 yards on a completion rate of 57.6%, completing 140 of 243 attempts. He threw for 11 touchdowns while throwing 12 interceptions. His passer rating was 72.6.
After an abysmal first two years, could you blame McCarthy if he no longer wanted to play for the Vikings?
Does McCarthy Still Want to Play for the Vikings?
In a recent interview with the media during OTAs on Tuesday, McCarthy made his stance clear on whether or not he wanted to play for the Vikings.
“I think I made it very clear I wanted to be here before I got here,” McCarthy said. “And I love this organization, I love this coaching staff. I absolutely love these players to death. This is where I want to be. I feel like I can thrive in this system. Everything played out exactly how I wanted it. I wouldn’t want anything to change.”

McCarthy’s stance seems pretty cut and dry. While QBs usually say all the right things publicly, this sounded like a player who is truly convinced he ended up in the perfect scenario. Between the coaches, the talent around him, and the offense, McCarthy seems to completely buy into Minnesota, seeing the Vikings as where he can become the quarterback they drafted him to be.
Kyler Murray’s Arrival Does Not Change the Fact that McCarthy Wants to Play for the Vikings
The arrival of Kyler Murray from the Arizona Cardinals might create buzz about the Vikings’ QB position, but it does not seem to faze McCarthy much at all. If anything, these quotes indicate he is entirely committed to competing and carving out a future in Minnesota.
It is part of the NFL to have competition, and McCarthy does not sound like he is trying to cut any corners. He sounds like a QB who believes in the organization, believes in the system, and believes that his best football is still on its way in purple and gold.
If Murray Succeeds, McCarthy May No Longer Want to Play for the Vikings
McCarthy is saying the correct thing at the moment since he likely believes he still has an opportunity to become the Vikings’ franchise QB. If Murray plays well next season, that might become unrealistic. Quarterbacks want to compete, but they do not want to stand aside for three or four years. Their patience can only be stretched so far once there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
If Murray becomes clearly locked in as the future of the Vikings’ quarterback position, do not be surprised if McCarthy eventually looks to move on for an opportunity where he may actually have a shot to seize.
Will McCarthy be in Minnesota Much Longer?
Only time will tell how long McCarthy will play for the Vikings after next year. If Murray fails this upcoming season, McCarthy will have every opportunity to bounce back and prove the doubters wrong. But if Murray is successful, keeping McCarthy around will make no sense.
The reality is, McCarthy has only had one real season in the NFL under his belt. He needs more seasoning and will likely get that opportunity in the next two to three years. Second chances do not come easy in the NFL. The question is whether he gets that second chance with the Vikings or another organization.
