New York Jets Path Back To Relevancy David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech

The New York Jets’ Path Back to Relevancy

After what was a historically bad 2025 season for the New York Jets, there was nothing to go but up. The year saw the Jets’ defense not record a single interception all season long. It also saw the decline of quarterback Justin Fields.

Nothing seemed to go right. But the 2026 offseason and NFL Draft seemed to have given the Jets life. The franchise seems to be rising from the midst of its struggles. While the on-field results are not visible yet, the organization is showing signs of improvement.

So, how are the Jets heading in the right direction?

The New York Jets’ Path Back to Relevancy

New York Jets’ Draft Capital

The New York Jets were widely considered the winners of the 2026 NFL Draft. They leveraged the picks gained from trading away stars like Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. The Jets selected edge rusher David Bailey second overall.

The Texas Tech product is expected to be a cornerstone pass rusher. This is with a defense that struggled to generate any pressure consistently in 2025.

With picks like tight end Kenyon Sadiq and wideout Omar Cooper Jr., the front office is surrounding the quarterback room with young, dynamic playmakers to help put star wideout Garrett Wilson.

Adding cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and defensive back V.J. Payne addresses a secondary that made history but did not record one interception all season.

Revamped Front Office Processes

New York Jets ‘general manager Darren Mougey has overseen a complete overhaul of the team’s scouting and evaluation systems. He implemented a new computer-driven draft system and grading scale. Mougey credits it for a more comfortable and decisive 2026 draft.

Nearly 30% of the roster is now composed of players drafted within the last two years. This indicates a shift toward a sustainable, homegrown core rather than relying on aged veterans and free agents.

Stability at Quarterback for the New York Jets

After numerous revolving doors at quarterback in 2025, the New York Jets are looking for stability at the most important position. The veteran Geno Smith is back on the roster to provide a steady hand and mentorship.

The team also added Cade Klubnik in the draft and has Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe in the room. This will be the start of a competitive environment for the starting job.

Veteran Defensive Integrations

Despite the youth movement, the New York Jets have added veteran leadership to shore up a defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in 2025. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is a massive addition to a secondary that lacked ball-hawking ability.

Bringing back linebacker Demario Davis gives the Jets familiarity and a defensive general to help lead the young linebacker corps.

Defensive linemen David Onyemata and Harrison Phillips were also a huge deal. These veteran interior linemen are tasked with fixing a run defense that allowed 139.5 yards per game last season.

Reflection

While head coach Aaron Glenn remains under significant pressure, the 2026 offseason has provided the Jets with the draft pedigree and veteran leadership necessary to finally snap their longstanding postseason drought.
