Brian Robinson Jr. entered free agency after serving as a primary backup running back for veteran Christian McCaffrey for the 2025 season. Appearing in 17 games while making 0 starts, the Alabama product finished the campaign with 92 carries for 400 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 16 games, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Eagles to advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs before brutally dropping to the Seattle Seahawks, 41-6.
Robinson Jr. originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The rookie made an impact despite suffering a gunshot wound in a shooting incident that occurred before his first season as a professional. Robinson Jr. made a quick recovery and ultimately recorded 205 carries for 797 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns to go along with nine receptions for 60 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown that year. The Commanders placed fourth in the NFC East, missing the playoffs, but the running back was named the 2022 Inspiration of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
Jayden Daniels took over as the primary starter to lead the offense in 2024, where Robinson Jr. had a breakout campaign. Appearing in 14 games while making 13 starts, the veteran finished with career highs of 799 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. The Commanders made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game that year before dropping to the Philadelphia Eagles, who eventually won the Super Bowl. Before the 2025 season started, the Commanders traded Robinson Jr. to the 49ers after betting on rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt to lead the backfield unit.
Since signing his rookie contract, Brian Robinson Jr. has appeared in 58 games while making 37 starts. During his time on the field, the Alabama product has recorded 2,729 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
