Inside Scoop: Top NFL Free Agent Signee Could Be Cut

Despite the Philadelphia Eagles signing him to a contract this offseason, they could cut linebacker Azeez Ojulari this upcoming season. According to Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report, he thinks Ojulari could be cut since he’s falling down the depth chart, which is a huge blow to the linebacker who was hoping to have a resurgent campaign this year with the Eagles. Originally selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Georgia product spent his entire rookie contract with the New York Giants but hasn’t been able to remain with the team due to injury concerns. The Giants got linebacker weapons like Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns, so there wasn’t any path for Ojulari to grow in this system either way.

Ojulari is facing the same challenge in Philadelphia as other players like Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt and Josh Uche have been passing him. It’s an unfortunate situation for the linebacker, who was looking forward to reigniting his career. After recording 22 sacks and 107 in four years, the linebacker is still one of the most reliable pieces in the league due to age and stability. As long as he can stay healthy, he should intrigue someone in free agency, and these four teams could give him a shot on the roster.

Next Possible Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

Despite the Los Angeles Chargers having a ton of potential in the linebacker corps, veteran Khalil Mack is still arguably the best one defensively. This means they need a significant upgrade if a veteran is outperforming the other youngsters. It’s been a disappointing offseason as far as adding some defensive firepower after just signing Da’Shawn Hand. Ojulari has the chance to do right and put on a phenomenal showcase in Los Angeles if he becomes available in free agency.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders have one of the oldest defensive rosters, probably in the league. Between Vom Miller and Bobby Wagner, their careers are winding down, and the only upshot they have is Frankie Luvu. Dominique Hampton has a chance to get some looks and opportunity, but for a team that wants to win a Super Bowl now, it makes sense for the Commanders to sign Ojulari on a budget-friendly contract, backing up Wagner and Miller.

Carolina Panthers

After releasing Jadeveon Clowney and Josey Jewell this offseason, the Carolina Panthers haven’t been able to find a viable replacement. Even though the Panthers improved the trenches unit for Derrick Brown, they can’t afford to ignore the linebacker room. New free agent signee Christian Rozeboom has some untapped potential, but Ojulari could put them back on the map, possibly as one of the best linebackers in the league.

Dallas Cowboys

Despite adding Kenneth Murray Jr. and Jack Sanborn as possible reliable linebackers, the Dallas Cowboys could use some more talent in that room. Damone Clark is a possible cut candidate, and Marist Liufau is unproven, so Ojulari’s signing makes all the sense in the world. The Eagles would never trade him to Dallas, but if the Cowboys have, they might have to do whatever it takes.
