Overview, Film Analysis, And 2025 Scouting Report Of Maryland DB Dante Trader Jr.
Measurables:
- 5’11”
- 196 lbs
Player Background:
An in-state commit out of McDonogh School, Dante Trader Jr. was a three-star cornerback commit in the 2021 class. He entered the Maryland football program after being committed to the team for almost two years. He found himself on the field early and often, appearing in 12 of 13 games his freshman season. None of them were starts, but he was still able to rack up 16 tackles, one for loss and a pass breakup.
He opened the 2022 season as a starter and maintained that role for the rest of his career. In 13 games, Trader Jr. tallied 62 tackles, picked off two passes, and broke up another four of them. The 2023 season was solid again, racking up 53 tackles, seven PBUs, two INTs and forcing his first fumble. He only played in 10 games during his final collegiate season, accumulating 59 tackles, a pick and four PBUs.
Accolades:
- All-Big 10 Honorable Mention (2024)
Strengths/Pros:
Trader Jr.’s mental skills are solid and shine when he rotates around and makes things happen. He processes plays quickly as they develop and gets himself into favorable positions as they get extended. He impacts tons of plays in their late stages and is seemingly always around the ball at their conclusion. His knowledge of schemes and how he can involve himself make him a major factor in run plays on the boundary and longer-developing inside runs.
As a deep safety, his instincts are solid, and rotates off his base to attack assignments both when and before QBs turn that way. Trader Jr.’s footwork in his backpedal is adequate and he’s able to stay active in quick turns. His hips move pretty well, and he works through any shortcomings with easy movements. His closeouts are impressive in all directions, driving downhill when needed and efficiently attacking cross-field assignments. He’s forceful through his tackles, showcasing good technique and driving ball carriers back.
Weaknesses/Cons:
Trader Jr. has the foundation to be a major impact player at his position but has some issues with critical aspects of his game. His body control and fluidity need to be improved early in plays while in coverage. He plays too upright when hovering at the second level and his hips drift too high in his backpedal. It limits his acceleration when matching cuts and causes him to be just a step or two behind on several plays.
Pairing with these problems, he doesn’t have the recovery speed to make up for most misses early in plays, especially downfield routes. Trader Jr.’s feet are too chaotic when rotating with route cuts, throwing his base around too much and needing to use extra effort. He drifts away from deep zone assignments too often, giving up some plays down the seams. His movement skills in traffic aren’t great with inconsistent vision, some later fires on run plays, and a mix of hesitancy and overextension.
Potential Team Fits:
NFL Projection:
Trader Jr. projects as more of a rotational piece than a plug-and-play starter when he enters the NFL. His play style and ability to remain near plays even when displaced could get him onto the field early in limited action, and he could develop into a decent player. His weaknesses probably keep him from becoming a true high-impact player in most cases, but he could be a reliable secondary piece.
