The Los Angeles Rams football season looks a lot like a classic Hollywood biopic. The Rams came from humble beginnings, starting 1-4 and taking their lumps early. After that slow start, however, the plot has ramped up, and with win after win the Rams are reaching the peak of their powers.
The season is fast approaching the climax, with an opportunity for an NFC West title and a playoff berth on the horizon.
Wide receiver Puka Nacua might just be the Rams’ film protagonist in 2024. Like the team, he also went through his early-season lows before rising to become the key piece of the Rams offense.
Last year, he cemented a role as the Robin to Cooper Kupp’s Batman. But this season, the boy wonder has supplanted the master, particularly in the last few weeks.
Puka Nacua is the Rams’ Best Offensive Player
Nacua’s further rise to stardom this season comes from both his on-field performance and off-field personality.
On the field, Nacua is the prototypical elite wide receiver. He has the route running and catch radius to make highlight plays, as well as the pure athleticism to play physically in short-yardage. Statistically, he overtook Kupp in both receptions and receiving yards, leading the team with 69 and 861, respectively.
His highlight reel speaks for itself. Whether he’s on the boundary, in the slot, near the line of scrimmage, or deep down the field, Nacua is one of the best receivers in the game.
Nacua once again showcased his dominance in the Rams’ Week 16 win over the New York Jets. In that contest, Nacua led the team with eight catches, 56 yards, and nine targets. By comparison, Kupp tallied three catches for 24 yards on three targets.
His touchdown numbers are the only facet of Nacua’s game that could be improved. Nacua has notched just three touchdown grabs this year, putting him at third on the roster. However, the Rams’ red-zone offense is more reliant on running back Kyren Williams and his role in both the pass and run game.
Off the field, Nacua’s youthful exuberance and high energy have made him a media darling. His face and personality dominate the Rams’ social media platforms, making him the first thing many Rams fans see on social media.
While this fact is not as important as his on-field performance, it shows that the Rams organization wants to push Nacua as a face of the franchise. This also has to do with the fact that Nacua is able to reach a younger audience while veterans like Kupp and quarterback Matthew Stafford have more of a generational gap.
Week 17 Preview
Expect Nacua to have a big game going into Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals. Nacua was out with an injury in the Rams’ game in Glendale, Arizona but will see the Cardinals for the first time on Saturday.
The Cardinals are an average pass defense in the NFL, tied for 15th with the Cleveland Browns. Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis’ secondary has allowed 212.5 yards per game and 18 receiving touchdowns. Nacua will likely face extra attention from safety Budda Baker.
Nacua has been relatively quiet against the Cardinals in the past, recording eight catches for 53 yards in two games. However, with his station as the alpha wide receiver cemented, he could have a monster game this weekend.
