Former Eagle Haason Reddick Is Looking For A New Team Again. How Did It Come To This Point?
Former Eagle Haason Reddick has had an interesting career. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in 2017, and he had a very up-and-down tenure with the team. Reddick saw his first breakout year in 2020 when he recorded 12.5 sacks. He would then go to his second team, The Carolina Panthers, in 2021, where he established he wasn’t a one-year-wonder with 11 sacks. Reddick signed with the Eagles in 2022 and would go on to have the best stretch of his career.
Reddick tallied 16.0 sacks in his first year with the team and a league-leading five forced fumbles. That was a career-high in sacks, and he was second in the league in that category in 2022. He continued to be a force on the edge in 2023 with 11 more. Despite his production, contract extension issues forced the team to trade Reddick to the Jets in April.
Now, Reddick is having similar issues with his new team and could look to be on the move again.
The Trade Request
According to NFL.com, Reddick requested a trade from the Jets this week after not receiving a new contract. Reddick has been holding out since training camp started, and now he seems to be trying to force their hand even more. Despite pressure from Reddick for a new deal, Jets GM Joe Douglas claims the team will not trade Reddick.
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” Douglas said in a statement, per AP News. As of Monday, Reddick has missed 21 days and counting of practice and has only reported to team facilities once. The one appearance was for his physical and introductory press conference.
On top of this, there seemed to be some confusion from the Jets front office about Reddick’s intentions when they traded for him. NBC Sports reported that Connor Hughes of SNY reiterated that the Jets were informed by Reddick’s camp that he would play under his current contract. In turn, the Jets were also open to “adjusting” his current contract, but only based on Reddick’s participation with the team. That obviously hasn’t happened and now the team and Reddick find themselves at a crossroads.
How Much Will The Edge Rusher Make?
The ESPN report shows that Reddick is currently in line to make around $14 million this season. That is the final year of a three-year deal he signed with the Eagles in 2022. However, he will already have lost about $1.7 million of that due to the fines he has accumulated.
If Reddick is looking for anything similar to the Danielle Hunter contract with Houston, it seems that Reddick is looking for higher annual pay rather than a larger sum of money. The Hunter contract is two years $49 million with the Texans, which is similar money but with less years increasing the yearly pay.
If the Jets and Reddick can’t find a solution, he could be on his way to his fifth team in eight seasons. That would not be ideal for the Jets, who made a play for Reddick after losing top pass rusher Bryce Huff. A seemingly no-brainer move for Reddick could potentially be turning into a disaster.
