Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles isn’t afraid to cut ties with any player. The NFL is a business; if you don’t perform up to standard, there might not be a spot on the roster. Consequently, several Bears players might be released before the start of the 2024-25 season.
6 Chicago Bears Who Could Be Cut
Khalil Herbert, RB
Since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Khalil Herbert has climbed the ranks to become the Bears’ featured running back after David Montgomery departed in free agency. Averaging 4.9 yards in three years as a Bear is remarkable. However, despite his solid rushing ability, Herbert falls short as a blocker and receiver. Newly signed D’Andre Swift is an excellent receiver out of the backfield, and second-year back Roschon Johnson provides stability as a blocker. Being a one-dimensional back could spell the end for Herbert in a Bears jersey. Additionally, the Bears could trade him to an RB-needy team like the Dallas Cowboys for a day-three draft pick.
Velus Jones Jr., WR
Fans have been disappointed with Velus Jones Jr. since he was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Jones missed his opportunity to make a name for himself: fumbles, dropped passes, and struggling to return kickoffs/punts. However, there appears to be another chance for him with the new kickoff rules being implemented next season. If Jones can beat out DeAndre Carter and Dante Pettis for kick returner duties, he can secure a roster spot.
Dominique Robinson, DE
Dominique Robinson had a hard-to-forget debut game with a career-high 1.5 sacks and seven total tackles against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite this strong start, he struggled to maintain his momentum. With rookie Austin Booker joining the squad, the Bears might decide to cut the former fifth-round pick.
Larry Borom, OT
Larry Borom had his opportunities as a starter throughout his tenure with the Bears. However, with 411 snaps played last season, Borom allowed three sacks and five penalties. Now buried in the depth chart behind Braxton Jones, Darnell Wright, third-round pick Kiran Amegadije, Matt Pryor, and Aviante Collins, Borom may find himself without a roster spot.
Jaylon Jones, CB
Jaylon Jones has been a solid contributor on special teams and, when needed, on defense. Despite this, there is a ton of depth at cornerback. Terell Smith looks like he’s secured the fourth CB position. Josh Blackwell might be the team’s best special teamer, and Greg Stroman Jr. can play in the slot and had a big game against the Washington Commanders last season. With one of the best CB rooms in the NFL, Jones might not have a spot on the roster.
Doug Kramer Jr., C
Doug Kramer Jr. had an unfortunate start to his career, missing the entire 2022 season due to a devastating injury. Although the Bears needed depth at center, Kramer is now behind Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton in the depth chart. With other reserves who offer more versatility and experience, like Ja’Tyre Carter and Matt Pryor, Kramer Jr. might have to find another team.
