The NFL Draft is this Thursday so rumors are swirling about what teams could trade their picks to move up or down. With reports of teams moving up to grab quarterbacks, some non-quarterback-needy teams are starting to get some talk. After a down season for the Eagles GM Howie Roseman is looking to help bolster a secondary that disappointed often a year ago.
No doubt that the secondary is lacking for Philly but talent is not the issue as they have a ton of it. However, the players are getting older and regression started showing last season. A bounce-back season is possible but for a roster with not too many holes getting younger is a priority. So Roseman is now considering moving up to bolster and strengthen an aging secondary.
Eagles Are Considering Trading Up For A Cornerback
Adam Schefter has reported that the Eagles are looking to trade up from pick 22 so they can grab a cornerback in the first round.
If Roseman wants a cornerback at No. 22, as many people around the league believe he could, he might have to move up again. Per sources, he already has been calling around, gauging what a trade up might look like to be prepared for what has become a near-annual tradition. It’s also worth noting Roseman, who has been Philly’s GM since 2010, has never drafted a corner, tight end, running back or safety in Round 1.
Eagles have talent and no need to give up too much but Roseman has always been dangerous and loves taking risks. A trade in the first round would mark the fourth time in five years that Roseman has made the call. The Eagles again refuse to take their foot off the gas constantly wanting to get better every year no matter how much talent they have. The Eagles have not drafted a cornerback in the first round since 2002 and the performance of the young guns leaves much to be desired.
Who Could The Eagles Target In A Trade Up
Terrion Arnold would be my first guess as it seems many teams have him high on their draft boards. He is an incredible player who rightfully so has gained traction throughout the offseason. He’s a smooth mover who has an incredibly high football IQ. He would be the perfect player to learn behind Darius Slay and James Bradberry for a season. The Eagles would again swindle the NFL by stealing a high-end cornerback prospect only getting better.
Another cornerback who could end up with the Eagles is Quinyon Mitchell out of Toledo. Mitchell has been on a huge rise ever since his impressive performance at the Senior Bowl. Mitchell is a hard-nosed player often being a willing tackler against the run. He is an elite athlete who plays with great speed and agility not afraid to be physical with any receiver no matter the size. We could be looking at one of the best ballhawks in the league in just year one. He might be off the board before the Eagles can get him even in a trade because of his elite potential.
It’s all just a rumor as of now but no one should be surprised if Roseman establishes dominance by trading up for an elite cornerback. The Eagles continue to never back down no matter the makeup of their roster.
