More 2024 NFL Draft Profiles

Several minor college football prospects capture the heart of NFL draft evaluators every year in the NFL draft. Whether it’s Tytus Howard in the 2019 NFL draft or Carson Wentz in the 2016 draft, minor school prospects need love. In the 2024 NFL draft, a prospect is seen as a favorite by many: Mason McCormick.

McCormick was a role player in his first two years as a Jack Rabbit and appeared seldomly. During his redshirt sophomore season, McCormick became a full-time starter and was honored as an FCS All-American. Over the next two years, McCormick would show unbelievable durability, never missing a game for 57 straight starts. He earned a few more all-American honors, solidifying himself as a Jack Rabbit legend. Would his tremendous college success translate to the NFL? Let’s dig into the film.

2024 NFL Draft: Mason McCormick Scouting Report

 McCormick’s Strengths

  • He has a thick build and frame to add more bulk. His good length and wingspan prove a good base for the player he could be.
  • He has the power and strength to latch onto the defender at the point of attack quickly.
  • is best on the move as a puller, one-reaches blocks, and on screens, where he punishes small defenders.
  • Smart football player with high football intelligence to recognize and stop basic line games and stunts.
  • He plays to the end of the whistle with a strike-first mentality. Has an aggressive physical edge to him.
  • Has great durability, with 57 straight starts. Team captain and team leader
  • He has a great NFL combine and displayed his athleticism.
  • Is most Effective in run games in a variety of rushing styles and systems.

McCormick’s Weakness

  • The film rarely shows the athleticism shown at the combine. He shows below-average twitch and explosiveness, especially against quicker defenders.
  • He plays so upright-style stuff and is sometimes out of place when he has to redirect. You can get caught out of position in space lumbering.
  • He can Struggle to make quick movements and post-snap direction changes, limiting his scheme versatility. Can get shredded pretty easily for a man with his talent
  • They can be beaten easily late in the rep due to the inability to hold blocks after creating good contact at the point of attack.

Projection: Fourth Round Pick

NFL Comparison: Justin Pugh

Best Fits: Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings,  and the Tennessee Titans.

Bottom Line

Mason McCormick is one of the most hyped small school offensive line prospects, and based on the film, I understand. He plays hard and does not quit until the whistle blows. He has good power, a high football IQ, successful experience, and great testing results. McCormick loves the game of football, and it shows.
The hype of him being an early day two pick is too much. He tested great at the combine, but I wondered where his athletic ability is on most of his tape. Mason looks very rigid and lumbering when he moves at times. He also has a bad pad level, which does not help his stiffness and hurts his power. The combine will get him drafted higher than he should. However, if he goes to a good offensive line coach, he could become a starter in the NFL.
