3 Potential Landing Spots for Former First-Round Quarterback

Here are the three potential suitors for former 2018 first-round quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky after being released by Pittsburgh Steelers.
Potential suitors Mitchell Trubisky

Here are three potential suitors for former first-round quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky has officially been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to reports, the decision was a mutual one after the two sides discussed it. He was slated to play in the second year of his three-year contract that would have kept him with the Steelers until 2025. This was cut short and now he’ll hit the free agency market next month.

The Steelers will only have one quarterback left on their roster, Kenny Pickett. This leaves him the lone starter after Mason Rudolph served as an injury replacement to Pickett last season. Rudolph led the Steelers to three straight wins to end the regular season for Pittsburgh. He will also hit the market once free agency opens up, but the Steelers could always bring him back.

However, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has plans for the quarterback competition in the Fall. Since there is pending competition, they could re-sign Trubisky to another deal. However, that’s unlikely as they’re considering pursuing Ryan Tannehill. So while there will be competition in Pittsburgh, it leaves the former first-rounder in doubt about where he might end up.

While he may have failed to impress during his stint as a starter for the Steelers, he still has another chance to re-write that. Trubisky threw three touchdowns and three interceptions while losing the starting job to Rudolph. His performance may tamper with his attraction, but there may be potential suitors still interested in Mitchell Trubisky.

Three Potential Suitors for Former First-Round Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky

Chicago Bears

Trubisky may make his return to the Chicago Bears this offseason. The Bears took him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and he made excellent strides in his second season with them. Trubisky led the Bears to the playoffs in 2018 and was named to his first Pro Bowl in his career. However, he’s projected to be a backup for a team that’s still interested in signing Trubisky.

The quarterback situation in Chicago seems unclear on what they may do with Justin Fields. The Bears have options on the table for them to pursue. They could release or trade fields to snag one of the highly-touted prospects, Caleb Williams. However, they would need some veteran presence in their quarterback room.

Trubisky might be the name that can be called up by Chicago. His experience can help Fields take the load off or whoever ends up as the next quarterback for the Bears. The Washington Commanders could make an interesting trade offer to Chicago to get Williams, though. So, that’s something to watch if Chicago will end up keeping Fields but rely on the free agency for a veteran quarterback.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcon’s quarterback situation is another rollercoaster ride in the league. Atlanta has the eighth overall selection in the first round of the NFL 2024 Draft, but they could trade up to draft a top quarterback. Taylor Heinicke earned his spot on the team, but he became inconsistent. He won the job over Desmond Riddler and Logan Woodside.

Riddler still has some potential and they can be the second team next to the Steelers to open up quarterback competition. Bringing in Trubisky would give them more options to see how he fits with the Falcons offense. They have the talent on the offense, but need a quarterback who’s a leader and Trubisky could be that. However, he could come in as a veteran to be beneficial for Riddler and Heinicke to become a better play-caller.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans quarterback depth looks very shallow walking into free agency. After Tannehill might be heading to the Steelers, this leaves Tennessee with some questions to answer in depth. Starting quarterback, Will Levis has earned his right and performed well enough to win the starting role. Now, after hiring Brian Callahan, he could be set up as their next franchise quarterback.

If Levis gets hurt, they’ll need to rely on a veteran to provide some help. Trubisky could be the answer to stabilize their rotation by tagging along Malik Willis. His presence could fast-track Levis’s development.
