Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts Agree to Contract Extension

Jalen Hurts earned his new contract coming off of an amazing 2022 season. In 15 games, he passed for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 760 yards on 165 attempts and a staggering 13 touchdowns from the quarterback position. The Eagles, the number one seed in the NFC, were 14-1 in the regular season in games Jalen Hurts started. His outstanding 2022 season would earn him runner-up for NFL MVP to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

As if that was not enough to earn him this contract extension, Hurts also led the Eagles to Super Bowl LVII. In one of his best performances of the season, he would account for 374 total yards and four touchdowns. It would prove to not be enough, however. His team would eventually lose to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 scoring the most points by a losing team in Super Bowl history.

Hurts’ rise to one of the best quarterbacks in the league did not come without turbulence. He started his college career at Alabama where he would be benched in the National Championship game, in favor of now-Dolphins quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Following one more season at Alabama, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma. Showing serious growth, he would become a 2019 Heisman Trophy finalist. After being drafted in 2020, he would sit on the bench for the majority of the season yet again. Hurts took over as the full-time starter in 2021 after the Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts.

Now the highest paid player in the NFL, Hurts becomes the first of the next crop of NFL quarterbacks to sign a contract extension. Beating out Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson, Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow, and Los Angeles Chargers Justin Herbert.
