Donte Jackson, Carolina Panthers, Agree to Contract

Viewed as someone with high potential that has yet to reach it, Jackson has spent his entire career thus far in Carolina. He has always been a player that you can pencil in for a few interceptions on the season. Jackson typically will not lock down a team’s best receiver for the entirety of a game. However, Jackson will not be the reason your team loses a game either. He currently falls in the average to slightly above-average range of players for his position. Someone you like, but would not overpay to keep.

During the course of his four-season career in Carolina, Jackson started in 51 games. During this span, he recorded 209 combined tackles, 167 solo tackles, and nine tackles for loss. He also registered 12 interceptions for 156 yards but no defensive touchdowns. Jackson also had two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for minus-one yards. He has yet to be selected to the Pro Bowl or receive an All-Pro Team nomination.

Jackson is a player that would fit best in a heavy zone-based scheme. Due to this smaller size and slight frame, he is not someone you want responsible for jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. Jackson is better suited to play deeper in the backfield with his eyes on the quarterback. This way he can use his speed and quickness to make his contribution to the play. Jackson would get bullied far too often if he were consistently asked to play in press man-coverage. Zone coverage is what Jackson, and his agility, are built for.
