Tyrann Mathieu, New Orleans Saints, Agree to Contract
Mathieu has been a popular player on the defensive side of the ball since coming out of LSU in 2013 and entering the league as a third-round draft pick by Arizona. Since that point, he has emerged as a top talent at safety in the NFL.
In 2022, his third season with Kansas City, Mathieu appeared in 16 regular-season games for the Chiefs and put together yet another strong year for the Chiefs. The 29-year-old finished the season with 76 combined tackles, 60 solo tackles, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
In three seasons with the Chiefs, totaling 47 games, Mathieu has tallied 213 combined tackles, 171 solo tackles, 13 interceptions, four forced fumbles, three sacks and two interceptions.
Prior to his time in Kansas City, Mathieu spent one year in Houston while taking the field in all 16 games for the Texans. During that brief stint in Houston, Mathieu enjoyed one of his best seasons to date while finishing with 89 combined tackles, 70 solo tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and one forced fumble.
To begin his career, Mathieu spent five seasons in Arizona while anchoring the back end of the Cardinals defense. Mathieu’s best season with Arizona came in 2015, when he played in 14 games and finished that season with a career-high 89 combined tackles, 80 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss, a career-high five interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble and one defensive touchdown.
In five years with the Cardinals, Mathieu managed to end his tenure with 308 combined tackles, 283 solo tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, four sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one touchdown.
The three-time Pro Bowl and 29-year-old Mathieu still has a few good years left in his playing career to help anchor the back end of a defense in the NFL. If he is able to stay healthy, he will continue that trend of being one of the top safeties in the league in 2022.
