Las Vegas Raiders Have Hired Mick Lombardi

The Las Vegas Raiders have hired former New England Patriots wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi to be their offensive coordinator

The Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired Mick Lombardi as their offensive coordinator per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Lombardi served as the New England Patriots wide receivers coach in 2021. He has held numerous amounts of coaching roles on the offensive side of the ball for both the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. Las Vegas put in a request to interview Cleveland Browns tight-end coach Drew Petzing for the same position. It is fair to speculate that Lombardi’s familiarity with Josh McDaniels gave him the edge needed to get this job. The details surrounding this contract including the length and value are unknown at this time.

Even though Lombardi is being hired as the offensive coordinator, Raiders fans can expect McDaniels to call the plays on offense. Lombardi will likely hold a role similar to that of Greg Olson when he held the same title under Jon Gruden. Lombardi’s familiarity with McDaniels will be a huge benefit when it comes to the installation of the new offense. McDaniels spoke previously about having the ability to adapt from play to play and series to series. Having someone on the staff that already understands his tendencies and preferences in player type will be invaluable.

While New England’s wide receivers were nothing to write home about in 2021, this hire by the Raiders is still a good one. It can be argued that Lombardi and McDaniels have been working with an empty cupboard at the skill position their last few years in New England. Las Vegas is in a somewhat better situation than New England, but not by much. Zay Jones is a free agent and the Raiders need an upgrade at the position. Whether it be through draft or free agency, look for this position to be a big focal point in the off-season.
