2021 Pro Football NFL Hall of Fame Game
Historical Background
The first Hall of Fame Game started back in 1962, with the New York Giants competing against then St. Louis Cardinals, which ended in a 21-21 draw. Since then, the Hall of Fame Game was held every year until 2011, when it was canceled due to the 2011 NFL lockout, and again in 2016 due to poor field conditions. Finally, in 2020, the Hall of Fame Game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 1980, the game was called in the fourth quarter with 5:29 remaining, and again in 2003, the game was called in the third quarter with 5:49 remaining on the clock due to severe lightning.
The last Hall of Game in August of 2019 was between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen was inducted into the Hall of Fame on that day, as was cornerback Champ Bailey, who played ten seasons with the Denver Broncos.
The Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers are also the teams with the most appearances in the Hall of Fame Game since 1962, with six appearances already, plus the upcoming event. All 32 teams have been in the Hall of Fame game at least once, and only four teams have not played more than once.
2021 Hall of Fame Game
This year we will see the Dallas Cowboys going against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame annual event. The Cowboys and Steelers were selected back in 2020 to face off in the 2020 Hall of Fame in the midst of the pandemic. But now, the fans will be able to attend the Pro Football NFL Hall of Fame at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. On that day, the Steelers and Cowboys will kick off the 2021 NFL preseason.
The Hall of Fame Game selections were announced during the week of the Super Bowl. The team selected usually has a famous former coach, player, or owner being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame to provide more excitement around the event and draw in fans.
From 1971 to 2010, one team from each conference was typically selected. Since 2011, that trend was weakened, with the priority being placed on the specific Hall of Famers who were inducted in the given year.
