With the 2026 season just around the corner, here are five season-defining games for Tampa Bay next season.
Five Season-Defining Games for Tampa Bay in 2026
In a 17-game NFL season, there are always a few games that teams can look back on as season-defining moments.
The results of those games can be the difference between winning a division title or missing the playoffs.
Last season, the swing games did not go Tampa Bay’s way. On Dec. 21, the Buccaneers dropped a road game to Carolina, falling to 2-3 against NFC South opponents and ultimately missing the playoffs due to a tiebreaker.
The Bucs also got trounced by Los Angeles on Nov. 23. The loss dropped Tampa Bay to 6-5 and put the team in a significant hole in the NFC playoff race.
Those losses were key reasons Tampa Bay missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Now, in 2026, the Buccaneers will look to come out on the right side of those swing games.
There are a few key things to remember when predicting which games could become season-changers.
- A 4-2 division record is usually the benchmark for winning a division. While the Panthers won the NFC South with a 3-3 record last season, that is an incredibly rare feat. Since the NFL expanded to a 17-game regular season, no more than one team in a season has won its division with a 3-3 record against division opponents.
- More than 80% of teams that endure a losing streak of four games or more end up missing the playoffs.
- An 8-4 record against conference opponents is generally the minimum for comfortably making the playoffs. A 7-5 conference record often is not enough.
With that in mind, here are five swing games for Tampa Bay in 2026. These games are listed in the order they appear on the Buccaneers’ schedule, not by importance.
vs. Green Bay (Oct. 4)
In Week 4, Tampa Bay will host the Packers in a key NFC matchup.
Green Bay has made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons and five of the first six seasons of the 2020s.
The Packers are poised to have another strong season in 2026. They return starting quarterback Jordan Love, along with a talented roster on both offense and defense.
However, the status of Green Bay’s top players on both sides of the ball is in question. Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons tore his ACL last season and is expected to return sometime between mid-October and late November, making him unlikely to play in Tampa.
Packers running back Josh Jacobs’ status also remains uncertain because of an ongoing investigation into domestic abuse allegations. Jacobs has denied the allegations and was present at the Packers minicamp earlier this month.
Tampa Bay has won three of its past four meetings with Green Bay, including a pivotal victory at Lambeau Field in December 2023 that helped put the Bucs on track for the playoffs.
With both teams carrying recent playoff success, this early-season matchup could have major implications at Raymond James Stadium.
at Carolina (Oct. 25)
Tampa Bay will go six games before facing its first NFC South opponent on Oct. 25.
That opponent will be the team that dethroned the Buccaneers last season, ending their four-year run as NFC South champions.
The Panthers snapped a seven-season playoff drought in 2025. It was former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales’ first playoff appearance as a head coach.
Carolina’s win over Tampa Bay last December was its first victory over the Bucs since the 2022 season. It also marked the first time the Panthers defeated former quarterback Baker Mayfield since releasing him in 2022.
The Panthers hope to take another step forward behind quarterback Bryce Young, who set career highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passer rating last season.
Carolina also features second-year wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who led all rookies in receiving yards and touchdowns in 2025. He was closely followed by Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka, who will also be looking for a big sophomore campaign.
This early division showdown could give one team a significant edge in the NFC South race.
at Chicago (Nov. 8)
The Bucs head to the Windy City for a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Bears.
Last season, Chicago went 11-6 and snapped four-year playoff and seven-year NFC North title droughts.
Head coach Ben Johnson helped bring out the best in former No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, who threw for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns.
The Bears also set an NFL record with seven wins after trailing in the final two minutes.
Winning in prime time has not come easily for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are 1-9 in regular-season prime-time games since Baker Mayfield became the starting quarterback.
Chicago’s emergence as a playoff team, combined with Tampa Bay’s recent prime-time struggles, makes this a key early-November matchup.
at Detroit (Nov. 22)
The Buccaneers come out of their bye week and head to Detroit to face an opponent they have seen frequently in recent years.
The teams have met four times over the past two seasons. The last three meetings have all taken place in Detroit, just as this one will. The Lions are 3-1 against the Bucs during that stretch, including a playoff victory in January 2024.
Detroit missed the playoffs last season after reaching the postseason in back-to-back years. However, the Lions still boast a prolific offense led by quarterback Jared Goff and numerous playmakers.
Given the recent playoff history between these teams, this game could carry major playoff-seeding implications.
The familiarity between the franchises, their recent success, and their talented rosters make this a critical late-season matchup.
vs. New Orleans (Dec. 20)
As Christmas approaches, the stakes could be high when Tampa Bay and New Orleans meet for the first of two matchups over the final four weeks of the season.
The Saints enter 2026 with higher expectations than they had a year ago. Second-year quarterback Tyler Shough had a strong rookie season, throwing for 2,384 yards and accounting for 13 total touchdowns in 11 games. He closed the season with four consecutive games of at least 250 passing yards.
Shough’s emergence helped the Saints win four of their final five games after opening the season 2-10. That late-season turnaround began with a 24-20 victory over Tampa Bay.
For the Buccaneers, that loss to the Saints started a four-game losing streak in December that derailed their season.
Tampa Bay will look to reverse that result in 2026 as it tries to reclaim the NFC South title.
