Browns' Supplemental 2026 Draft: Why Pursuing Brendan Sorsby is A Winning Move for Cleveland

Browns Supplemental 2026 Draft: Why Pursuing Brendan Sorsby is a Winning Move for Cleveland

The discussion for Cleveland is now turning to the Browns’ supplemental 2026 draft. Brendan Sorsby, after weeks of legal battles, NCAA rulings, and conference pressure, has decided to enter the rare summer draft instead of playing another college season.

This move creates a unique opportunity for a franchise willing to take a risk on a player who will come into the league with a character question mark that possesses an immense upside.

Who Is Brendan Sorsby?

Sorsby is a 6’3″, 235-pound dual-threat quarterback who has played at Indiana and Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech, where he gained national attention as a potential NFL franchise passer. His combination of size, arm talent, and athleticism made him one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects heading into 2026.

The Gambling Scandal

Sorsby’s path to the NFL changed dramatically due to a major gambling scandal. He reportedly placed over 9,000 bets totaling at least $90,000, including wagers on college football games, with some involving his own teams.

Now, to be fair, $90,000 broke down into 9,000 bets comes down to an average of $10 a bet.

These are the kind of throwaway bets that a lot of fans just casually lay down without thinking about how much they have flushed down the drain by the end of the year. Although it doesn’t excuse his behavior, it’s a fact that no one seems to be willing to stand up on Sorsby’s behalf.

Regardless, the NCAA ruled him ineligible. After winning a temporary court injunction to play at Texas Tech, intense backlash from the Big 12 and the NCAA forced a resolution. Because of this, Sorsby and Texas Tech agreed to part ways. He has now applied for the NFL supplemental draft.

Brendan Sorsby Pre-Scandal NFL Draft Projection

Before the gambling controversy, Sorsby was viewed as a potential top-five pick with the traits of a franchise passer. Scouts praised his arm talent, athleticism, and playmaking ability. Some would point to potential issues with his progressions or willingness to push the ball into tight spaces aggressively, but there is no denying the upside in Sorsby’s game.

It’s difficult to project what the future for Sorsby may have been, considering we won’t get to see another full collegiate season to dissect on video. But it’s abundantly clear that Sorsby would have had more than a couple of scouts pushing for him to be selected early in the draft.

How the NFL Supplemental Draft Works

The supplemental draft operates differently from the regular draft. Teams bid future picks (in this case, 2027 selections) on eligible players. For the Browns Supplemental 2026 Draft, key rules include:

  • Bids are submitted by round
  • The highest bid wins the player
  • The winning team forfeits that pick in the following year’s draft
  • Tiebreakers are based on a lottery system, divided by previous season records

The supplemental draft is expected to take place in late July 2026.

Cleveland’s Acquired Rams Pick an Advantage

The Cleveland Browns traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams and received a 2027 first-round pick (plus a 2028 second and a 2029 third) in return. This gives them two first-round picks in 2027, with the one from the Rams projected to be a late pick.

More importantly, teams can use acquired draft picks in the supplemental draft. The Browns now have extra flexibility to bid on Sorsby without burning their 2027 first-rounder, which is currently projected somewhere in the top 10, possibly the top 5.

Being able to burn that late first-round pick on a potential franchise quarterback is a luxury few teams will ever get a chance to sniff. Cleveland is in a unique position to add Sorsby in the Browns’ Supplemental 2026 Draft.

The Argument for Drafting Brendan Sorsby

Here’s why pursuing Sorsby in the supplemental draft makes too much sense for Cleveland to ignore:

  • Quarterback Need: There is no guarantee that any quarterback on the Browns roster can be relied on as a future starter, let alone a potential franchise passer
  • Asset Flexibility: Having that late first-round pick in their back pocket gives the Browns Supplemental 2026 Draft the type of flexibility that possibly no other team will have for the supplemental draft
  • Talent at a Discount: Getting Sorsby at the bottom of the first is a severely lessened price than what his pre-scandal draft cost would most likely have been
  • Low Opportunity Cost: Even if Sorsby needs a full season on the bench to get up to speed in the NFL, the Browns are perfectly positioned to let him sit and learn while they run out the clock on Deshaun’s contract
  • Fits Modern NFL: Sorsby’s skill set is that of a potential franchise passer in today’s NFL, with the ability to move in the pocket, out of the pocket, and deliver strikes on target, on time

The Last Word on the Browns Supplemental 2026 Draft

The Sorsby situation will be one of the more interesting stories to follow this season. While the gambling scandal adds significant risk, the talent is undeniable, and he is definitely going to be selected in this additional summer draft.

For the Cleveland Browns, the combination of quarterback need and extra draft capital from the Rams trade makes this a prime opportunity to explore. Whether they ultimately submit a bid remains to be seen, but they are clearly one of the teams best positioned to do so, and they should absolutely be in the mix for Sorsby’s services.

There are going to be a handful of general managers who will be willing to ante up more than what the public may perceive as a reasonable price for a talented player that comes with some risk. If Cleveland is seriously interested in bringing Sorsby to the Browns roster, that first-round bid is likely going to be the cost to make sure it happens.
