Jets’ Head Coach Aaron Glenn Discusses Geno Smith Following Brendan Sorsby’s Supplemental Draft Announcement

The New York Jets appear to have an established plan around veteran quarterback Geno Smith in 2026. While the speculation about potential quarterback additions is a certainty every offseason and especially this time of year, the organization has repeatedly expressed confidence in their quarterback as he continues to grow in Jets’ head coach Aaron Glenn’s programDuring Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp press conference, the Jets head coach was asked about the strides that Smith has taken this spring to impress him. The first-year head coach was eager to share what Smith has accomplished in the program throughout the offseason.

Jets’ Head Coach Praises Geno Smith’s Leadership

“Everything that I spoke about before, his leadership, his command of the offense. And I would say more than just the leadership on offense, just how he operates in the locker room. I’m excited to have that player, and you can see the maturity in him. You can see how he’s grown over the years. And he’s really rubbing off on a lot of the guys here. So, I’m excited what he brings to the table.”

These words from Glenn suggest that Smith’s value is about more than just what he will do on the football field on Sundays. Leadership, command of the offense, and what he brings to the locker room are all qualities that coaches are looking for in franchise quarterbacks, and if nothing else, Smith is bringing a veteran presence to an organization ready to turn the corner. The fact that the Jets head coach singled out Smith’s maturity and the effect that he has had on his teammates is what is to be expected out of any successful quarterback’s career.

Glenn Discusses Jets Potential Interest in Brendan Sorsby

Later in the press conference, Glenn was asked about whether the Jets have any interest in Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby after he declared for the NFL supplemental draft:

“I’m going to focus on the guys that we have here now, and that’s something that I’m sure me and Mougey talk about. But listen, I got the quarterbacks here that we’re focused on right now.”

The Jets’ head coach may have left the door open to possible conversations about Sorsby with his Mougey line, but ultimately stressed his focus on the quarterbacks that the Jets have currently on the roster. Instead of getting excited about outside possibilities, he emphasized the importance of developing the quarterbacks currently in the building, which ties back perfectly into his previous assessment of Smith. If any discussions occur regarding Brendan Sorsby, or any other available quarterback, they will likely be behind the scenes for the time being.

Jets’ Head Coach Confirms That the Jets Offense Will Be Centered Around Geno Smith

As training camp approaches, the Jets appear focused on continuity rather than creating competition at quarterback. The Jets’ head coach’s comments painted the picture of a coaching staff that believes in Smith’s leadership and the direction of the room as a whole.

At this point in the offseason, it is difficult to say if the Jets will be looking to add additional roster depth at the QB role. Right now, it looks like they want to build chemistry and for Smith to keep setting the pace for a group of people learning the new system and new coaching staff. If they ever take a look at Sorsby for development, it has yet to be seen, but if they do, it would be a move to develop depth and a player for the future, not someone for today.

Whether the Jets eventually explore Sorsby as a developmental option remains to be seen, but based on Glenn’s remarks Tuesday, Geno Smith remains firmly at the center of the team’s plans.
