Miami has had plenty of recent success finding quarterbacks in the transfer portal. Cam Ward was the best quarterback in college football in 2024, which led to him being the first-overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Carson Beck led the Hurricanes to their first College Football Playoff appearance and a trip to the national championship.
They found another quality signal-caller, incoming transfer Darian Mensah. Mensah was overlooked coming out of high school, but performed well at both Tulane and Duke. Now he takes the biggest stage of his collegiate career, starting under center for one of the sport’s most recognized brands. What made Mensah such a coveted player in the transfer portal, and can he be a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft?
Darian Mensah 2027 NFL Draft Early Player Profile
Measurables
Height- 6’3″
Weight- 205 lbs.
Background
Mensah was a three-star recruit coming out of St. Joseph (California) and the 112th-ranked quarterback prospect in the Class of 2023. He committed to Tulane and redshirted the 2023 season. Mensah took over as the starter in 2024 and immediately exceeded expectations. He completed 65.9% of his throws for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions across 13 games for the Green Wave.
After his first season as a starter, Mensah transferred to Duke for the 2025 season. He proved he could match his production playing at the Power Four level. In 14 starts with the Blue Devils, Mensah threw for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He led Duke to its first outright ACC title since 1962. Following another productive season, Mensah transferred to Miami for the 2026 season.
Strengths
Mensah possesses exceptional arm talent, and he is great at stretching the field vertically as a passer. His ability to hit wide receivers in stride downfield is exceptional. He has a lightning-quick release and isn’t afraid to attack the middle of the field. Mensah makes NFL-caliber throws into tight windows regularly.
His arm talent allows him to generate velocity on passes, even when he’s throwing off-platform. He has the combination of arm strength and accuracy to make any throw he’s asked to. Mensah’s athleticism is good enough that he can extend plays from the pocket and improvise. He also shows tremendous poise, as he stands in the pocket and delivers throws on time when pressure is in his face.
Weaknesses
The biggest concern for Mensah is his frame, weighing just 205 pounds. Although he’s been healthy to this point, his smaller frame can bring up concerns about durability at the next level. While Mensah is a good enough athlete to extend plays as a passer, he doesn’t consistently beat defenses as a runner. As a pure passer, he’s excellent; however, he isn’t a true dual-threat quarterback. Mensah can also improve his footwork to get the most out of his incredible arm talent.
Overview
The 2027 NFL Draft is expected to be loaded at the quarterback position. There may be as many as seven signal-callers selected in the first round. Mensah is among the top prospects at the position, but hasn’t gotten as much buzz. While Arch Manning and Dante Moore, among others, have played at premier programs, Mensah hasn’t had that chance. That will change this fall, as he will have far more eyes on him at Miami. His combination of arm strength, accuracy, and quick release makes him as good as any passer in the nation. While he has a lighter frame and isn’t a great athlete, his all-around game is good enough to be a first-round pick.
Mensah will have the best supporting cast he’s had in his collegiate career in 2026, in particular at wide receiver. Malachi Toney returns after a stellar freshman campaign, and Cooper Barkate followed Mensah to Miami after being his top target with Duke in 2025. He is currently projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick, but can make a case as the top selection in 2026. With his traits and more help around him, Mensah can be one of the biggest risers among all prospects this season.
