It’s been a never-ending saga for the San Francisco 49ers, but things look to be shaping up for the Brandon Aiyuk free agency rumors this summer. While the NFL world saw wild updates from Aiyuk via social media, it looks like a release might be coming as soon as this week. According to the disgruntled receiver’s Instagram, he advertises himself in a video with a caption that states, “coming to an endzone near (you).” If you’re a 49ers fan or someone wanting to see this drama end, you’d have to be relieved that the team will finally release the receiver.
Earlier this week, the receiver implied that the 49ers are “scared” to release him, especially with how much interest he could garner. However, there should be a resolution in the next few weeks, and will the team hold out to let him go right before the 2026 season? It is entirely possible, especially with how the latest contract extension for the wideout has been a complete abomination. The team already voided all of Aiyuk’s guarantees on his contract, and the way they’re holding him can be argued as probably punishment.
The 49ers have signed veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk to overhaul their offense for QB Brock Purdy. They also drafted De’Zhaun Stribling to continue to stack its offensive pass-attack, but they must walk into training camp without any distractions.

A Release Before Training Camp?
Aiyuk being released before the start of NFL Training Camp would be ideal for the 49ers. The team can’t afford to avoid walking into mandatory practice with any distraction hanging behind them. They have formed one of the most talented offenses, and this team looks to be a Super Bowl-caliber roster if they can stay healthy. For the disgruntled receiver, he’s aiming to play at least next season.
There’s still a shot that a team could sign him before the 2026 season if he’s released, but that’s not a guarantee. Due to his antics, rosters could be hesitant to sign him to even a one-year deal. Still, there’s a chance that these three teams could roll the dice on the wideout as their next low-stakes offensive weapon.
Possible Free Agent Fits
Washington Commanders
Of course, the receiver would probably only be looking to play for the Washington Commanders and QB Jayden Daniels. The two former teammates reuniting would undoubtedly put the Commanders in the driver’s seat for an explosive offense, but is it a huge need? Not necessarily, the Commanders drafted Antonio Williams while bringing back Dyami Brown and signing Van Jefferson to one-year deals.
Unless they cut Jefferson or add Aiyuk late in the 2026 season, it could be ideal to bring in the troubled star playmaker. He’d have to have a little patience, especially with Luke McCaffrey returning from his season-ending injury, who is expected to get a larger role despite the mishap.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Meanwhile, the loss of veteran WR Mike Evans has completely blindsided the chemistry of this offense for QB Baker Mayfield. While they signed a running back-type receiver in Kenneth Gainwell, they have not signed a veteran in free agency. With Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan and now drafted Ted Hurst this year, they have one of the youngest receiving units in the league. While it isn’t a dealbreaker for their postseason aspirations, it’d be smart to bring in a veteran receiver to help Mayfield enhance this offense with experienced playmakers.
Mayfield is entering a pivotal 2026 season, who is still waiting on a new contract, so the Buccaneers should look into signing Aiyuk to give him some WR3 role.
Indianapolis Colts
Reportedly, the Indianapolis Colts are “mulling” to sign a veteran wide receiver at least before the 2026 season. The team successfully extended Alec Pierce, but he plans to miss some time well into training camp. While this means that Ashton Dulin receives a bigger role, he can’t give what QB Daniel Jones is looking for. Josh Downs is the other receiving option that’s been consistent, but they should sign a veteran to help complete this offense.
Aiyuk doesn’t need to be WR2, but someone who could receive rotating snaps to elevate this offense, especially for the playoffs, if the Colts reach there.
