New $50M Sean Payton Extension May Spark Blockbuster Trade

After head coach Sean Payton received a new five-year contract from the Denver Broncos, an Alvin Kamara trade could be on the verge for the organization to overhaul its ground game. According to sources, the Broncos rewarded Payton with a new deal after leading the team to back-to-back postseason appearances, including this past 2025 season, when they reached the AFC Championship Game. Although the trip ended after Bo Nix sustained a season-ending injury, he’s returned in a walkthrough and looks to be in excellent shape this upcoming season. After trading for WR Jaylen Waddle to strengthen the pass attack, the team might not be done upgrading its offense.

However, there’s some room for improvement in their ground game and tight end room. While they signed J.K. Dobbins to a new two-year contract, the Broncos still arguably have one of the most inconsistent units. Former second-round pick, RJ Harvey, showed plenty of promise during his rookie campaign, hauling in 540 yards and seven touchdowns rushing, 356 yards and five touchdowns receiving, as well as 353 yards returning kickoffs. He’s proven to be at least a decent backup bullet, but nothing too exciting, where he can be a starter.

Meanwhile, the question is: who should the Broncos trade for to address the RB1 concern? Dobbins is solid, but he’s too bruised and is only reliable when healthy. With that, there’s only one thing left to do for this offense that can find itself in the AFC Championship Game once again in 2027.

Alvin Kamara Trade: Payton $50M Extension Sparks Rumor

After locking in Payton for an additional five seasons, the Broncos could get aggressive here again. Kamara is listed as a trade candidate this offseason as the New Orleans Saints are still figuring out what to do with him. The veteran is entering the final year of his deal, and since they signed Travis Etienne to a four-year contract, it sure looks like he’s the long-term replacement. Here’s the latest on what Saints GM Mickey Loomis said on Kamara when brought up on the “uncertain futures” of their star players:

“We’re just trying to see how he’s going to fit on our roster,” Loomis said. “Obviously, there’s a resource management element to it. We’ll get to that over the next week or two.”

If you read along the lines of “over the next week or two,” you’d have to wonder what the team is waiting for, since it’s now June and he said this statement almost over a month ago. Kamara is no longer the same elite player he once was, but he’s still a capable runner who can take a team to a Super Bowl. Despite mentioning that he would retire if he’s traded or released, one can argue that he’s probably lying. If he had a chance to reunite with Payton, he would take it, and if not, here are two teams that could snatch him before the 2026 season.

Other Possible Fits

Dallas Cowboys

If this offseason taught anyone about the Dallas Cowboys, it’s that they will be aggressive when it’s the right moment. The team came close to receiving Maxx Crosby to improve their defensive pass-rush, but failed to meet the Raiders’ asking price. Before the Cowboys re-signed Javonte Williams to a new extension, it was rumored the team could trade for Kamara. It’s easy to see why he would fit into this offense, given that they’d benefit from his acceleration in third-down situations.

With Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah and Malik Davis still getting rotating snaps, why not create a 1-2 punch unit between the Saints RB and Williams?

Baltimore Ravens

Kamara joining RB Derrick Henry would probably address the concern that Keaton Mitchell bolted for a new team. It was a bit of a head scratcher as to why the Baltimore Ravens let him sign with the Chargers, but it would make sense if the Saints RB joins Lamar Jackson and this offense. Jackson runs a fast-paced offense that works well for Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, so there’s no doubt that it could be even sweeter with the veteran in the same mix.

Kamara could cover redzone situations, while Henry may pulverize the opposing defenders, creating one of the most monstrous run units.
