Washington Commanders News and Updates: What is Circulating This Week?
Things have been moving a little quicker than usual around the Washington Commanders this past week. Not the kind of splashy headlines that take over the league, but enough updates to start piecing together where things are headed. A few roster decisions, some comments coming out of the building, and a growing sense of expectations all starting to creep in at the same time. Let’s get into some Washington Commanders news and updates worth mentioning.
Round 6 draft pick Kaytron Allen had very few turnovers at Penn State
During an interview with Zach Selby of the Washington Commanders, recently drafted Kaytron Allen talked about his minimal turnovers as a running back at Penn State. During his last two seasons at Penn State, Allen only fumbled the ball once while having 430 carries. Allen stated the following on his ability to hold onto the ball:
“You got everybody’s dreams and aspirations in your hands,” Allen said. “So, I take great pride in it, and that’s something I won’t do. I take pride in not doing turnovers and stuff. That’s not who I am. And [the] football, I take great care of because I love football and I don’t want nobody else taking my dream aspiration in a way.”
Adam Peters speaks highly about Antonio Williams
The Commanders picked up wide receiver Antonio Williams out of Clemson during the third round of the NFL Draft. Washington’s general manager Adam Peters could not have been happier about this pickup, and had the following to say about Williams.
“Even though he is not a 6-4 guy, he can still win on the outside and his speed and his releases and his route running and his details allow him to do that,” Peters said. “And the same thing with inside is he can win with his quickness as well. There’s just a lot of really, really good things about him and just an all-around great package,” Peters said. “So thrilled to have him, thrilled to add him to the wide receiver room.”
Report claims that Commanders still have interest in wide receiver free agent
Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports indicated that the Commanders are still very much interested in acquiring Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco’s general manager John Lynch has indicated that they are interested in trading Aiyuk. Thus far, there have been no suitors. The most likely outcome is that that Aiyuk will be released from San Francisco this summer. It has long been rumored that the Commanders would be interested in picking him up and reuniting him with quarterback Jayden Daniels. Both Aiyuk and Daniels played together in college at Louisiana State University.
DeArdo had the following to say about where the 49ers presently stand with Aiyuk and reiterated the Commanders interest in the wide receiver:
“A few nuggets were unearthed during the final day of the draft. General manager John Lynch said that the team isn’t planning to release him. They remain open to trading him. The Commanders reportedly have a significant interest in acquiring Aiyuk, who was one of the NFL’s most productive wideouts during the 2022 and ’23 seasons,” wrote DeArdo.
“The Commanders know that the 49ers don’t have much leverage and are likely waiting for San Francisco to release him. The 49ers surely know Washington wants Aiyuk to pair with his former college teammate Jayden Daniels.”
