The Detroit Lions have been busy this week, including picking up the fifth-year option for RB Jahmyr Gibbs but declining it for standout Jack Campbell. While the 25-year-old has been a major part of this defense, the team still plans to work out a deal at some point during the offseason. However, Campbell is set to become a free agent next year, with the Lions having to figure out what contract they can agree on. The linebacker is coming off the 2025 season, hauling in 176 tackles, nine tackles for losses, five sacks and three forced fumbles, which are best in his career. It shouldn’t be a surprise if Campbell demands a top-notch deal, and while it’s deserved, it might not work in their long-term financial plans.
Detroit just gave WR Amon-Ra St. Brown a blockbuster deal not too long ago after trading RB David Montgomery to Houston. The Lions are hoping that they can work something out, but the fact that they declined his fifth-year option means all options are on the table.
Lions Decline Fifth-Year Option for All-Pro Jack Campbell, Trade Could Be Looming
It will also be dependent on how the season plays out. The Lions went 9-8 last season, missing the playoffs, but they’re hoping to turn the page. Detroit signed RB Isiah Pacheco and DE DJ Wonnum for depth on both sides of the team. They haven’t made any superstar additions, so the team will probably lean on the old blueprint.
However, the loss of Alex Anzalone in free agency should put Campbell in the spotlight to thrive. It might not mean good news for the Lions since they probably won’t meet his asking price, but Campbell should be a favorite to garner plenty of trade interest if the Lions have another losing season.
Possible Destinations
Dallas Cowboys
After having one of the worst pass-rushing defenses last season, the Dallas Cowboys improved in a major way. The team traded for Rashan Gary and Dee Winters while selecting Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham for depth. However, the Cowboys have postseason aspirations, which means it wouldn’t be surprising if Jerry Jones gets creative before the trade deadline. Shemar James and Donovan Ezeiruaku are listed as the starters for the defense, but that could change if Lawrence and Barham put on a good show in minicamp.
If it’s the same old story for this defense, the Cowboys just might have to take on that risk on a young talent like Campbell to give them a physical linebacker to help them.
Los Angeles Chargers
Meanwhile, the Chargers aren’t in the market for a linebacker after re-signing Khalil Mack, but selected Akheem Mesidor in the draft as the possible successor. Los Angeles has one of the most talented depth in their linebacker unit, but no one has stepped up to put on a slobberknocking show on this defense. If they want a TJ Watt or Maxx Crosby-type player to elevate this defense, they should try to get Campbell if he’s available in free agency next offseason.
Kansas City Chiefs
Speaking of elevating the game, the Kansas City Chiefs lost Leo Chenal, which leaves Cole Christiansen needing to step up. They still have Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton, but one more superstar to help Chris Jones and the defensive line won’t hurt. Campbell would arguably be the best replacement for this Chiefs defense if they can make a good offer to Detroit.
