2026 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Tyler Onyedim

The 2026 NFL Draft class has some intriguing prospects on the defensive line. Tyler Onyedim may be one of the sneakiest selections a team can make going into Day 2. With his potential yet to be realized, Tyler will enter the NFL as a work in progress who will need a good situation to reach his full potential. His intriguing blend of length, power, and movement skills positions him as a high-upside interior presence. In the right system, Onyedim could quickly emerge as a disruptive force capable of anchoring a defensive front.

Tyler Onyedim NFL Draft Overview

Tyler Onyedim began his collegiate career at Iowa State and steadily worked his way into the rotation before transferring to Texas A&M for his graduate season. Onyedim spent four years with the Cyclones, primarily as a 3-4 defensive end, then moved inside to the 3-tech at Texas A&M. There, he showed the versatility to handle multiple alignments across the defensive line.

In 2023, he posted 42 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks while adding nine quarterback hurries. For 2024, he recorded 8 starts, 33 tackles, and 2.5 tackles for loss. In 2025, he posted 48 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 17 quarterback pressures.

Strengths

  • Has the frame and length to shield and reposition the block
  • Possesses versatility across the entire defensive line, regardless of scheme
  • Quick off the snap with good lateral movement skills
  • Remains engaged and moving throughout the entire rep
  • Uses hands effectively to disrupt the block and create rushing paths
  • Has the lower body strength to work through the blocker’s anchor
  • Drives the block towards the run, effectively stifling forward progress

Weaknesses

  • May need to add weight in order to handle more powerful athletes
  • Fails to consistently evolve within the rep, leaving him with no answers if immediately stalled
  • Can play too upright and stiff, creating easier avenues for the blocker to remove him from the play
  • Fails to consistently recognize the patterns of an offense
  • Questions of whether there is enough natural athletic flexibility to develop as a rusher

Projection: Round 3
Best Fits: Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins

Bottom Line on Tyler Onyedim

Tyler Onyedim can contribute immediately on early downs and in sub-packages, with a shot at developing into a quality starter. He doesn’t possess any “wow” factors that will make coaches covet him in this class, but he does have upside that has yet to be achieved. Adding muscle, improving elasticity, and developing a rushing toolkit would go a long way toward securing additional contract years.

Tyler athletically profiles similarly to Sheldon Richardson of Missouri, but there is much more work to be done with Onyedim’s game, specifically in developing his rushing beyond the first move. The physical traits are clearly there. With proper coaching, Tyler could quickly develop into a problem for opposing offenses. Onyedim is more projection than polish at this point in his journey, but he’s a strong bet to overachieve his selection spot as a professional.
