The Panthers Should Treat Bryce Young as a Bridge QB Before a Big Payday

Final Verdict: Pick Up the Fifth-Year Option: Delay the Long-Term Deal

Bryce Young has earned the right to stay with the Carolina Panthers. He has not yet earned the right to get paid like a franchise quarterback.

The Panthers’ strategy should be clear:

  • Pick up the fifth-year option to maintain cost-controlled stability and keep control of a key asset.
  • Avoid a long-term extension until Young proves he can perform consistently over multiple seasons.
  • Build the roster around him, maximizing the window of opportunity while his contract remains team-friendly.
  • Treat him as a bridge quarterback — a player who can stabilize the team and grow into a long-term option, but has not yet proven he deserves the top-tier investment.

Carolina has finally climbed out of the quarterback graveyard. They cannot risk burying the franchise under a contract that hasn’t been earned.

The smart move is to slow-play the situation, let Bryce earn it, and give the Panthers the best chance to build a real contender.
