2025 NFL Draft: Tyler Warren Scouting Report

Tyler Warren enters the 2025 NFL Draft as one of the best tight end prospects available, slightly ahead of Colston Loveland of Michigan and Harold Fannin Jr. of Bowling Green. He was a full-time starter for two years at Penn State, working up the depth chart playing behind Brenton Strange and Theo Johnson until the 2024 season. In 2024 he set a school and Big Ten record for receptions (104) and receiving yards (1,233) and was the first Big Ten tight end since 1956 to record four rushing touchdowns. Warren won the Mackey Award for the best tight end in the country and finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting. He was a first-team All-American by the FWAA and the Sporting News and a second-team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the AFCA, and the Associated Press.

Warren is the quintessential, do-it-all-in-line tight end with the size, athleticism, and competitive mindset that can improve any offense. Whenever he steps on the field, he plays with the swagger that reads he is the best player there. Warren has the speed and quickness to be a weapon at all three levels of the defense and has the toughness and ball skills to make a contested catch over the middle of the field.

Strengths:

  • Size, toughness, and athleticism are a plus.
  • Possesses an alpha male mentality on the field.
  • Will play any position on the field (taking direct snaps, slot receiver, fullback, H-back, and can throw on a trick play).
  • Possesses a high football IQ, evidenced by his experience as a high school quarterback.
  • Strong, skilled, sure-handed receiver.
  • Aggressive at the point of attack on lead blocks.
  • Plays with good technique when pass-blocking.

Weaknesses

  • Susceptible to being redirected on routes when contacted with a defender.
  • Route running nuance and details will need improvement; Warren had some sloppy reps last season in that department.
  • Does not possess elite top-line speed in the vertical passing game.
  • Hand placement could use some work sustaining blocks as a run blocker at the line of scrimmage and hand technique at the second level.

NFL Comparison: Greg Olson

Teams with a need at the position: Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets

Projection: First Round

Bottom Line on Tyler Warren

Warren is the ultimate do-it-all prospect in the 2025 draft. First, he has a version of that mamba mentality that is rare for a player of his talent level. He has shown versatility with catching, blocking, running the ball, and throwing passes. Warren is physical at the catch point and can get open in zone coverage and run after the catch. His weaknesses mentioned above are all coachable, and Warren is the type of player in the locker room who will work on them beginning day one of a team’s rookie minicamp. Warren will be a plug-and-play player that will make a difference immediately, and he has the chance to be a Pro Bowl-caliber tight end early in his career.
