University of Virginia safety Jonas Sanker

2025 NFL Draft Early Scouting Report: Jonas Sanker, Virginia

The Virginia Cavaliers’ secondary has seen consistent production out of Jonas Sanker and he looks to continue that in the NFL. Here is a 2025 NFL Draft Early Scouting Report and film analysis on him.

Overview, Film Analysis, And Early 2025 Scouting Report Of Virginia DB Jonas Sanker

Measurables:

  • 6’1”
  • 210 lbs

Player Background:

A two-way player for The Covenant School and 2021 graduate, Jonas Sanker stayed in-state as a three-star safety recruit and committed to UVA. He saw action in nine games during his freshman campaign, making five total tackles. He elevated himself into a major role the following season, starting nine games and playing in ten. His 2022 totals ended with 63 tackles, two pass deflections, an interception, and a forced fumble.

Sanker was a season-long starter in 2023, turning in a fantastic campaign. He topped the 100-tackle mark for the only time in his career, breaking up 11 passes and accumulating three FFs. He transitioned into a more coverage-first role for his final season in 2024 with excellent results. He picked up 98 tackles, four PBUs, his first two collegiate sacks, and an interception.

Accolades:

  • First Team All-ACC (2024)

Strengths/Pros:

Like most prototypical box safeties, Sanker is an absolute missile when working downfield. His best attributes come to life once he triggers, flashing efficient pursuit angles and an impressive burst. His downfield movement is confident, and he gains leverage quickly on both ball carriers and receiving targets. He communicates extremely well across the middle of the field, directing traffic and facilitating defensive schemes in real-time. He also navigates through traffic skillfully on his direct pursuits and maintains his momentum.

Sanker’s first step after his trigger is nasty. He keeps his center in line with his base while moving fast enough to change direction quickly. His feet are smooth during his initial backpedal, and he stays in position to shoot in any direction when needed. He levels receivers at the catch point and his underneath instincts are sharp. His effort is noticeable throughout the play and he hits second gear when straight-line pursuing. His experience and athleticism also make him a potentially valuable special teams asset.

Weaknesses/Cons:

His coverage skills have been developing as his collegiate career has gone on, but his size and current struggles likely limit Sanker to a box safety role. He gets too turned around on cuts in closer coverage and gets far too jittery with limited help around him. He also needs to compact some of his movements to match his stockier frame more effectively. His upper half can drift too far backward in his backpedal, likely one of the catalysts for his jerkiness.

Sanker’s backfield vision is definitely lacking, giving up leverage too easily on options and getting too locked in on one player. He gets moved out of position too often early in plays with either physicality or extended releases. He needs to improve some of his open-field tackling with his contact strength and wrap-up technique. His aggression needs to be consistently higher than in its current state, with activating his trigger earlier a large part of that.

Potential Team Fits:

NFL Projection:

Sanker can be an immediate producer for teams needing safety help but is likely viewed as more of a project rather than a complete product. He offers intriguing attributes against the run and when combatting short-game offensive schemes, but will have to clean up some of his coverage woes. Sanker projects as a Day 3 option whose ceiling is a consistent starter in the box, with a decently high floor because of his special teams abilities.
