The Los Angeles Chargers have arguably the NFL’s weakest group of wide receivers, but help could be on the way in the form of a Bo Melton trade. A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Rutgers product found a home with the Green Bay Packers after failing to establish himself with the Seattle Seahawks. While he’s no superstar, the wide receiver showed promise last year, hauling in 16 receptions for 218 yards and one touchdown.
Bo Melton made the Packers 53-man roster, but that doesn’t mean he’s safe from a trade. The Packers have remarkable depth at wide receiver with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks. Melton doesn’t have a clear path to the field, and Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes the team could send him to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
Chargers, Packers Could Agree to Bo Melton Trade
The Los Angeles Chargers need wide receiver help in the worst way. Second-round pick Ladd McConkey has promise and 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston had his moments during training camp, but this receiving core is otherwise a complete disaster. Jordan Palmer and DJ Chark are unremarkable journeymen, Brenden Rice is a seventh-round rookie, and Simi Fehoko has four receptions throughout his three-year career. Justin Herbert is amazing, but nobody could match Kansas City’s offense with this limited firepower. A Bo Melton trade wouldn’t completely fix this offense, but it would be a step in the right direction.
Melton wouldn’t be the top option in this passing attack by any stretch of the imagination, but the former seventh-round pick flashed playmaking potential last year. Much like the Packers, perhaps the Chargers can compensate for their lack of pass-catching talent by building a depth chart with several reliable role players. Depending on how the season goes, Bo Melton could be anything from the second- to fourth-best receiver on this depth chart, and that range of outcomes justifies a seventh-round trade. The only question is whether or not the Packers would agree to it.
Would the Packers Sign Off?
After a questionable start to the 2023 season, Jordan Love firmly established himself as Green Bay’s future with a strong finish. The former first-round pick led his team to the playoffs and narrowly missed beating the eventual NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers. Now well ahead in their rebuild, this team is ready to compete with one of the deeper groups of wide receivers in the league. While they don’t have a Davante Adams, they have four proven options who could start on most teams. This leaves Bo Melton buried on the depth chart, and they could trade him if the price is right.
The only problem is that a seventh-round pick probably isn’t enough to get the job done. Green Bay loves building through the draft, but the NFL is all about winning games. The odds of that seventh-round pick ever becoming anything more than a special teams contributor are slim, so why would they trade Bo Melton for such a minimal return? Wide receiver is one of the most important positions in the game, and Milton provides valuable depth in the event injury strikes. Maybe a sixth-round pick would get the job done, but the Packers probably won’t deal him for a seventh-rounder.
