Backup Quarterback Battle Brewing in New York

After Aaron Rodgers & Tyrod Taylor, the Jets are still determining the quarterback room. The Jets backup quarterback competition.

Intending to return to the playoffs in over a decade, the New York Jets roster is in great shape. Joe Douglas took a calculated approach focusing on the trenches with major additions to both the defensive line and a rehauling of the offensive line. No position will be under a bigger microscope than the quarterback position. In a pass-driven league, the right quarterback can elevate even the worst offenses. With four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers returning after his season-ending Achilles injury, the position group is much stronger compared to last season. As of now, with Rodgers and veteran Tyrod Taylor atop the depth chart, a battle is still going on for the backups. Jordan Travis‘s recovery has opened the door for Andrew Peasley and Adrian Martinez. The preseason will be a great indicator of who is third behind the veterans. Let’s examine the Jets backup quarterback battle further.

Backup QB Battle Brewing in New York

Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh built a competitive team in New York. Systemically, the duo has constructed one of the best defenses in the NFL. Along with it, they’ve added key contributors on offense in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. A healthy Aaron Rodgers elevates their team with a rebuilt offensive line too. However, the reality of a 40-year-old returning to MVP form is a tough ask for most. While he will be consistent, the additions to the quarterback room can allow them to stay afloat if Rodgers gets hurt again. The Jets backup quarterback will be veteran Tyrod Taylor. The former Pro Bowl quarterback performed admirably when his number was called by the Giants after Daniel Jones’s ACL tear. His dual-threat ability and track record as a game manager have many relieved not to see Zach Wilson again. However, behind Taylor is still an open competition.

Andrew Peasley

After drafting Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis, the Jets double-dipped on rookies by signing Andrew Peasley out of Wyoming. Travis’s ankle injury from January will cost him his rookie season. With a golden opportunity in place, Andrew Peasley can shine this preseason. After backing up Jordan Love at Utah State, Peasley transferred to the University of Wyoming. As a starter, Peasley led Wyoming to a 17-9 record. He seldom showed off his underrated arm strength but showed great poise in the pocket along with solid athleticism. Accuracy has been an issue at times but possesses great traits to be a long-term backup. With 49 total touchdowns in 24 games, Peasley has an intriguing upside if he can generate easier reads to help his accuracy.

Adrian Martinez

Along with Peasley, the Jets made another addition at quarterback. They signed 2024 UFL MVP Adrian Martinez two weeks ago. Martinez was once a highly touted prospect at Nebraska before his struggles forced him out of the job. Eventually, he transferred to Kansas State and managed to help the Wildcats capture the Big12 conference title in 2022. However, it wasn’t enough to generate interest as Martinez went undrafted in 2023. After being cut by the Lions, Martinez signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League. The move was a great gamble by Martinez, as he led the league in rushing yards and league MVP. Martinez completed 58% of his passes for over 1,700 yards and 18 total touchdowns in 10 games to capture the league championship. Like Peasley, Martinez is also a great runner who struggles with accuracy.

Who’s the front-runner?

With Jordan Travis recovering from his devastating ankle injury, New York must have a qualified third quarterback option. New York relying on an Aging Aaron Rodgers with Tyrod Taylor isn’t bad at all. However, Tyrod Taylor’s injury history should also indicate he’s a risk to miss time as the Jets backup quarterback. Adrian Martinez is the more experienced starter of the two. Yet, his short tenure could cause him to miscommunications trying to learn a new offense. As it stands, Andrew Peasley seems to be the favorite due to his tenure and solid red-zone decision-making. The preseason will also allow him to showcase his arm strength more than he was able to at Wyoming.
