The Kansas City Chiefs opened training camp with several players going on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. On the first day with veterans in attendance, another name was felled for the time being.
Chiefs’ Taking It ‘Day-By-Day’ With Justin Reid: Andy Reid
Justin Reid Joins Chiefs’ Walking Wounded
Charles Omenihu, Derrick Nnadi, Jaylen Watson, and Joe Thuney all landed on the PUP list as expected. The same goes for B.J. Thompson, who landed on the non-football injury list (NFI), where starting safety Justin Reid will join him, per Chiefs.com’s Matt McMullen.
Reid is dealing with a quad injury.
“We’re just day-by-day in it right now and see how he does,” Head Coach Andy Reid told reporters about Reid after practice. “He’s very honest with you and he’s not going to hide anything. He’s going to make sure he tells you how he’s feeling, and so we trust him with that. And then, [Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance Rick Burkholder] will take care of the rest of that.”
The rules are far more lenient in training camp and the preseason, so Reid can come off the NFI list at any point during then and rejoin the action.
He will have to miss four games if he is still on the list by the deadline for final roster cutdowns.
The date for that is August 27, at 4 p.m. ET, giving Reid and the other injured Chiefs to heal up in time for their Week 1 clash against Lamar Jackson and the 2023 AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens.
Justin Reid Earns Career-Low Grade After Setting Multiple New Highs
Reid is in his third season with the Chiefs after four productive seasons with the Houston Texans. He has been an integral piece to the Chiefs’ back-to-back Super Bowl runs.

The former third-round pick (2018) recorded career highs with 94 total tackles, 74 solo stops, and 3.0 sacks in 2023. He had seven pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble. Reid has also been durable, missing one game in his two seasons with the reigning champs. He still received the second-lowest grade of his career from Pro Football Focus in 2023.
This is despite posting a career-low 6.9% missed tackle rate, per Pro Football Reference.
Patrick Mahomes, Xavier Worthy Turn Heads at Chiefs Training Camp
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was direct, saying there was no time to “ease” rookie first-round wide receiver Xavier Worthy into the flow of things. Worthy matched that energy, saying forming a strong connection with the three-time champion was vital. The new potentially dynamic duo got off to a good start on the first day of camp with everyone in attendance when Mahomes found Worthy for a deep ball.
“This is gonna be fun,” the Chiefs social media team captioned a post with the clip on X.

The Chiefs could need Worthy – the No. 28 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft – to step into a significant role from the outset. Their receiving corps is not rife with bona fide playmakers. They could also lose 2022 second-round breakout Rashee Rice to a multi-game suspension.
