After three disappointing seasons, one outlet believes the Washington Commanders could cut wide receiver Dyami Brown. A third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Washington hoped Brown’s downfield ability would translate to the professional level. That hasn’t happened, as the wide receiver finished the 2023 season with just 12 receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown. Since entering the league, the North Carolina product has recorded just 29 receptions for 476 yards and three touchdowns.
Now relegated primarily to special teams work, both Washington and Brown could benefit from a change of scenery. While he’ll earn a chance to compete for a starting job, Bleacher Report believes that Washington will cut Dyami Brown before the start of the 2024 season.
Commanders Could Cut Wide Receiver Dyami Brown
Unfortunately for Dyami Brown, this analysis makes all the sense in the world. While the North Carolina product hasn’t had the best quarterbacking, he has yet to prove he can do much of anything on an NFL field. Having never eclipsed 12 receptions or 170 yards in a season is egregious, and while he occasionally makes a big play, it’s not enough to earn him a roster spot over younger players with higher upsides.
Given the lack of production, a cut could be the end of the road for Dyami Brown. However, he was a third-round pick for a reason, and another team could give him a shot, even if it’s just on the practice squad or as a core special teams player. Seeing as he’ll probably sign for the league minimum, every team could be interested in him, but these five organizations make the most sense.
Potential Landing Spots
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are throwing darts at the wide receiver position. With Keenan Allen and Mike Williams out of the picture, the team is hoping it can get lucky with one of Cornelius Johnson, Brenden Rice, or DJ Chark turning into a decent option. Statistically, all three are far more likely to fail than succeed, but you can’t blame the team for trying. If cut, Dyami Brown can be a similar low-risk, medium-reward signing for a team desperate to find reliable playmakers.
Kansas City Chiefs
Rashee Rice will face a suspension and Xavier Worthy is already battling a hamstring injury, so Kansas City’s once-reliable wide receiver depth chart is now down to Marquise Brown and a series of players who are best left on the bench. Dyami Brown is not a proven commodity by any stretch of the imagination, but the cut candidate might be able to beat out the underwhelming trio of Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross. After all, if anyone can make the most of his skillset, it’s offensive mastermind Andy Reid.
New England Patriots
The Patriots currently have a collection of unremarkable veterans and untested rookies at the wide receiver position. Kendrick Bourne is a fine role player and Demario Douglas showed some promise as a rookie, but the rest of the depth chart is up in the air. Rookies Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker will have spots on the roster, but the last spot or two on the roster is wide open. If cut, perhaps Dyami Brown can fill the role Bill Belichick hoped to use on Tyquan Thornton.
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints have two reliable receivers in Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. However, someone needs to be the third option in this offense. A.T. Perry showed promise as a rookie, but it wouldn’t hurt to add some competition for the third-round pick. Dyami Brown might make the cut on this top-heavy depth chart and, in a worst-case scenario, could fill Shaheed’s role as a deep threat if injury strikes.
Dallas Cowboys
Last year, the Dallas Cowboys added Brandin Cooks to bring a vertical element to the offense. Unfortunately, age caught up with the former first-round pick, and he’ll probably be even slower in his age-31 season. Dyami Brown came into the league as a poor mans version of Cooks, and perhaps he can finally reach that ceiling in a new environment. There is a 99% chance nothing comes of this signing, but it can’t hurt to bring him in.
