The Chicago Bears have a history of inconsistent and subpar offensive tackle play. However, things have changed since Ryan Poles was hired as the Bears General Manager. As a former offensive lineman, Poles understands the value of having consistent play from the offensive line. Consequently, he has established a strong foundation at offensive tackle by drafting both Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright. Pro Football Focus recognizes this and has placed both offensive tackles in their top 32 OT rankings.
Chicago Bears Offensive Tackles Highlighted In PFF’s Top 32 OT Rankings
Analysis of the Bears Offensive Tackles
Braxton Jones is the first Bears offensive tackle on the list, ranked at 31. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Jones earned a starting role at left tackle and started all 17 games during his rookie season. What makes Jones unique is his long arms, which he uses to steer defenders away, and his aggressive playing style. However, he faced challenges in his sophomore season, including a neck injury that sidelined him for six games. At times, Jones struggled with penalties and keeping his balance with smaller edge rushers. While he has undeniable potential, the recent drafting of OT Kiran Amegadjie in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft could signal the end for Jones if he doesn’t improve.
Darnell Wright was the only second-year offensive tackle to make the list, taking the final spot. Ryan Poles used his first first-round selection on Darnell Wright with the 10th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Wright moves fluidly for a big guy and is a mauler in the run game, showcasing aggressive finishing skills. Wright went against some of the best in the game, struggling at times but gaining valuable experience. Despite that, he was the only offensive lineman who started every game for the Bears this past season despite suffering from a nagging shoulder and ankle injury. As a rookie, Wright has already shown the Bears that he will be a cornerstone on offense for the next decade. With time, Wright will be in the conversation as one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL.
Outlook
The Bears have a promising young core at offensive tackle. Wright is poised to improve, and Jones should have a chip on his shoulder with Amegadjie joining the squad. Unfortunately, the interior of the Bears offensive line has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent center play over the past few seasons. Teven Jenkins, arguably the Bears best lineman, has struggled to stay healthy, while Nate Davis had a challenging first season in Chicago. The Bears also had multiple players start at center, which hasn’t worked out.
Despite these issues, Jones and Wright had standout rookie seasons, defying expectations and making the All-Rookie team. Both are young and have ample time to develop into top-tier NFL tackles. If they continue to gain experience and the offensive line finds some stability, the Bears will finally have a competent offensive line they have desperately been waiting for.
