The 2024 NFL Draft is officially over and done with, which means free agent wide receivers like Tyler Boyd will soon find new NFL homes. While several teams added talented young prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, there simply aren’t enough to go around. You can never have too many talented playmakers in today’s pass-happy NFL, and Boyd is still a reliable option for teams that still need more wide receiver depth.
Tyler Boyd is not longer a 1,000-yard player like he was in 2018 and 2019, but the free agent can still be a functional part of just about every offense out there. Last year, the eight-year veteran finished the season with a respectable 67 receptions for 667 yards and two touchdowns on 98 targets. While he was nobody’s top priority in the first wave of free agency, a major date on the NFL calendar could spike interest in the veteran.
Free Agent Tyler Boyd Could Sign With New Team In Coming Days
Up until today, all free agents counted against the compensatory pick formula. For those unfamiliar with the rule, the NFL hands out additional picks between the third and seventh rounds to teams that lose free agents, with the quality of the pick depending on the caliber of the player lost. While this helps maintain a competitive balance throughout the league, it prevents good-but-not-great players like Tyler Boyd from finding a free agent home.
To counteract this, starting at 4PM, all free agent signees will not impact the compensatory pick formula. Seeing as he won’t potentially cost a team a draft pick, Tyler Boyd should have no issue finding a team in the coming days. Following the NFL Draft, these five organizations could still use another reliable set of hands.
Possible Destinations
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers added Ladd McConkey in the 2024 NFL Draft, but the Georgia product cannot singlehandedly save this depth chart. Quentin Johnston had an atrocious rookie season and Josh Palmer is nothing more than a journeyman. Even if McConkey hits the ground running, this team needs a proven, reliable option in this passing attack. Tyler Boyd shouldn’t break the bank as a free agent and is a natural fit for Jim Harbaugh’s quick passing offense.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers were linked to Tyler Boyd throughout the early free agent process. Perhaps the addition of Roman Wilson in the third round impacts their decision-making, but Pittsburgh should remain interested in signing Boyd. Russell Wilson is an experienced veteran, and he won’t want to put too much faith in an untested rookie adjusting to life in the NFL.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens had a great draft, but they could use a chain mover in the middle of the field. Devontez Walker is a redundant one-trick pony and won’t fill the Odell Beckham role in this offense. While Tyler Boyd isn’t an exact copy of Beckham, the free agent should be able to provide a reliable set of hands for Lamar Jackson.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints did not add a wide receiver until the fifth round, so they still need to find a Michael Thomas replacement. Thomas is at his best quickly getting open in the short and intermediate part of the field, which makes Tyler Boyd a natural free agent fit. While he’s not nearly as good as Thomas at his peak, the longtime Bengal should be able to match Thomas’ 2023 output.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs made everyone’s lives miserable with the Xavier Worthy pick, and the rookie should have a great career in Kansas City. However, this team still needs an insurance policy for Rashee Rice. The wide receiver will face some type of league punishment, and Tyler Boyd can help keep the ship afloat as a free agent.
