2024 NFL Draft: Ryan Flournoy Scouting Report

It’s been a journey for Ryan Flournoy and it’s one that’s worth studying up on as we get to the NFL Draft. Flournoy came from Homewood-Floosmoor High School out of a Chicago suburb and played at the largest school division. He elected to first attend Central Missouri at the Division II level and redshirted in his first season in 2018. In the lead up to the 2019 season, Flournoy had to battle through an injury. Despite that, he appeared in 10 games and recorded 170 yards off of 17 receptions while making more of an impact as the year went on.

He transferred out to Iowa Western Community College but, as with most, he did not play football in 2020. Flournoy then led the Reivers in receiving in 2021 with 715 yards and seven touchdowns off of just 38 receptions. Following the season, he transferred one again but this time up to the FCS level with SEMO.

In his first season with the Redhawks, he was elected as Team Captain. Flournoy returned the favor by leading the team with 984 yards and seven touchdowns off of 61 receptions in 12 games. In his first season at the FCS level, he earned First-Team All-OVC honors. He continued his dominant play in 2023. In 10 games, Flournoy recorded 57 receptions, 839 yards, and six touchdowns. This time, he made the inaugural First-Team All-Big South-OVC Football Association team.

Flournoy was one of the few non-FBS invitees to this year’s Senior Bowl. He has the opportunity to be the first SEMO player drafted since 2019 (Drew Forbes, Cleveland Browns).

Strengths

  • Has decent NFL size
  • Is a vertical threat and can take the top off of the defense (4.44 speed)
  • Incredibly athletic (9.89 RAS)
  • Both physical and slippery with the ball in his hands
  • Has a great release, can create immediate separation and/or fight off press
  • Has good instincts when running routes and finding soft spots
  • Is more than willing and able to block downfield

Weaknesses

  • Competition level; only ever played against D-II, JUCO, and FCS defenses
  • Age; will be 25 in October
  • Needs to work on footwork on breaks
  • Did not participate in agility drills; concerns arise on tape regarding change of direction
  • Has been known to just go through the motions if not getting the ball

NFL Player Comparison: Van Jefferson
Projection: Fifth/Sixth Round
Best Fits: Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Chicago Bears

Bottom Line on Ryan Flournoy

Few prospects are as well-traveled as Ryan Flournoy but he’s been a force to be reckoned with at every stop. He is a smooth runner and plays faster than the 4.44 time would suggest. Flournoy has good, strong hands and can make catches away from his body, and is a threat after the catch.

As expected, the level of competition is a concern. However, when pitted against NFL talent at the Senior Bowl, he was very impressive. He has coaches raving about his team-first mentality and his willingness to do whatever it takes to win. He has a few things he needs to work on to be successful at the next level but the athletic profile is there.

Ryan Flournoy has Day 3 steal written all over him.
