NFC team Washington Commanders named as suitor for 1,000-yard Free Agent and former Cincinnati Bengal wide receiver, Tyler Boyd. According to a report, the Commanders are named a “top fit” for the lone free-agent receiver among a list of wideouts that are still available. The Bengals haven’t made any moves or reached out to Boyd about a contract extension so it looks like they’re keeping Tee Higgins instead. However, the Commanders are still a receiver which they’ll look in this year’s NFL Draft class for a reliable young prospect.

It shouldn’t hurt the team if they were to get a low-cost veteran this year to complement Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin. After losing Curtis Samuel in free agency to the Buffalo Bills, the Commanders are still searching for a replacement. Adding another weapon could help whoever the rookie wideout they draft that can last with the team for a decade. According to Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, he listed one free agent that could help each team, listing Boyd as one who could help Washington.

The Commanders have been doing their homework this offseason by signing some key starters to help the supporting cast for a rookie quarterback. Washington is almost done overhauling their entire roster since the new General Manager Adam Peters and Head Coach Dan Quinn are taking over. Last season, the wideouts for the Commanders looked promising with Dotson, McLaurin and Samuel.

However, it felt like a nightmare for them since former Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy couldn’t figure out how to get the ball to their best receiver. McLaurin has been thriving on Washington’s offense consistently despite the miscues the team has been dealing with the past years.

The Team Needs a WR3

The Commanders are shaping up their offense nicely for whoever they draft at quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the first round. They have the pieces coming together, especially signing Center Tyler Biadasz from the Dallas Cowboys to protect the next quarterback to make plays. It seems like Washington has always been effective in their receiving corps even when Samuel was still around.

Adding another consistent weapon like Boyd would help achieve greatness on the field. Signing him would give Washington another wideout who’s been able to have two consecutive seasons with over 1,000 yards. Boyd has been impressive in his tenure with Cincinnati, posting six straight seasons with at least 667 yards. However, his numbers have been going down, notching the fewest yards last season.

Bengals starting quarterback Joe Burrow suffered an injury for 10 games, which could be why Boyd’s numbers are down. When a quarterback is healthy, Boyd can continue to produce impressive numbers and keep the offense rolling. He hasn’t had a bad season until last year which shows that his numbers matching up with McLaurin would make Washington’s offense explode.

Other Possible Team Fits

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, several teams remain interested in Boyd, however, most are probably going to wait until after this year’s draft. The Baltimore Ravens could be sneaky to sign the former rival wideout to team alongside Zay Flowers. The Ravens need a reliable wideout after the release of Odell Beckham Jr. after one year. Flowers was the only consistent weapon for Lamar Jackson other than Mark Andrews.

The Chiefs, Chargers and Saints are probably his best landing spots this offseason. The Chiefs are one of the most dominant teams in the league right now so Boyd can easily excel there. The Rashee Rice car crash shows that there’s an open space on WR1 waiting for Boyd. However, if he wants to get more touches then he could land with the Chargers under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

After releasing Michael Thomas, the Saints need a weapon for Derek Carr to help alongside Chris Olave. Adding a weapon for Carr could improve his production.
