Super Bowl Contender May Sign $72 Million Free Agent

Here is how Super Bowl contender Kansas City Chiefs may sign $72 million free agent and former New Orleans Saint, Michael Thomas.
Chiefs may sign Thomas

Super Bowl contender and back-to-back champions Kansas City Chiefs may sign $72 Million Free Agent, Michael Thomas this offseason. According to a source, the Chiefs are urged to sign the former Pro Bowler before the NFL Draft this month. It isn’t too late for Kansas City to bring in a low-cost receiver to fill in a spot via free agency. Thomas hasn’t been paired with a quality quarterback since Drew Brees so this makes sense that the rumors are circulating in the first place.

Patrick Mahomes is considerably the best quarterback in the league right now since Tom Brady’s retirement. It would give a boost to Thomas’ career if he were to pair with Mahomes for this upcoming season. Mahomes wouldn’t turn Thomas into a 1,000-yard receiver but he could go back to his old self. The Ohio State product was drafted second-round pick at No. 47 in 2016.

Thomas was a dominant force when Brees was under center but his numbers have been plummeting in the last number of years. However, his track record of injuries and problems with the Saints’ staff slowly made him turn into the receiver that everyone should forget. Thomas started his career with four straight 1,000-yard seasons and two All-Pro nods. His best season comes from his 2019 campaign, notching 149 catches and 1,725 receiving yards.

Thomas was named the Associated Press’s Offensive Player of the Year for his production that season. Slowly, he has only managed to play in double-digit games since 2019 due to injuries. Derek Carr was his quarterback at the time and only notched 39 receptions for 448 yards and one touchdown in 10 games played. However, he should get back on his feet with the former Super Bowl champions.

They May Sign Him Before the Draft

The Chiefs could pursue the former All-Pro right before this year’s NFL Draft as it’s right around the corner. Kansas City lost Marquez Valdes-Scantling due to salary cap issues so that leaves a major hole in their offense. Also, the Rashee Rice investigation is ongoing so it’s likely he won’t be on the team going forward. Rice faces at least seven charges in connection to the car accident.

However, the good news is that Kansas City has plenty of options to choose from in this year’s free agency. Names like Odell Beckham Jr. and Michael Gallup are still available to be signed to a contract. They won’t be receiving any top contracts from any teams this year since most are focused on this year’s draft. The veterans will likely receive one-year deals at the bare minimum.

This would be the same case for Thomas, who is looking to be ring-chasing in his career. It’s been several years since he has been healthy so it’s only right to take the bare minimum for his services. However, Thomas wouldn’t mind taking this deal which means he could win a potential Super Bowl.

Other Potential Receivers for Kansas City

As the Draft is around the corner, Gallup and Beckham are worth mentioning that could be still available. Both receivers aren’t in their prime anymore but it would serve the Chiefs another reliable target. However, they could target by signing former Cincinnati Bengal, Tyler Boyd. The Chiefs could also be aggressive and trade for Tee Higgins from the same team.
