Andrew Van Ginkel, Minnesota Vikings, Agree to Contract
Linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel had a strong finish to his contract. Appearing in 17 games while making 11 starts, Van Ginkel ended the season with six sacks, 69 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, 19 quarterback hits, and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. The Miami Dolphins themselves had a solid season, making it to the playoffs before eventually falling to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.
Andrew Van Ginkel originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Miami Dolphins, the Wisconsin product spent the majority of his rookie season battling injury. In total, the linebacker only appeared in six games while making one start. While on the field, Van Ginkel finished his inaugural season with 15 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, four quarterback hits, and one sack.
Now healthy, Van Ginkel established himself as a key part of the defense in 2020. Starting in 11 games while appearing in all 16, the linebacker recorded 5.5 sacks, 48 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, 10 quarterback hits, and three forced fumbles. The Dolphins showed immediate improvement, going 10-6 during the second season of the Brian Flores Era and narrowly missing the playoffs.
Van Ginkel returned to a similar role in 2021 and put up similar numbers. Starting in 14 games while making 17 appearances, the linebacker recorded four sacks, 71 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, 20 quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. After missing the playoffs again, the Dolphins fired Flores and brought in Mike McDaniel.
The linebacker saw his production go down during the first year of McDaniel’s reign. Appearing in 17 games while only making five starts, the fifth-round pick finished the season with 0.5 sacks, 47 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and four quarterback hits. Despite the low output, the Dolphins re-signed Andrew Van Ginkel to a one-year contract after the season.
